Has anyone actually done back-to-back at the track test on foreward facing scoops compared to cowls and what were your results......... I ordered a pin on hood instead of the heavy bolt on I have pinned on now and am considering a cowl ONLY if it`s actually faster. I would totally seal either scoop and my cowl opening is sealed off which might help the cowl..........

I think there has been a post on here about that, send a PM to a Kiwi on here called REBEL, I'm sure he has been through this with his Valiant coupe (Dart)

6"cowl hood extended and trimmed back to 1.5-2"s off the windsheild sealed to carb against factory 6pac hood unsealed and no hood.
No hood won over both hoods in ET
the cowl was a tenth slower over no hood and the 6pac was about 3-4hundreds. the cowl went the best mph(1) but killed the 60ft so maybe the weight of it hurt it.we lightened the hood slightly by removing the seal to the carb but havent had a chance to go back and give er a try.

I would think a taller scoop, like the older pro stock scoops, with the opening higher into the main airstream, or less turbulent air would be the best. Look at all the higher scoops the pro stocks of the day ran. Just my thoughts.

In back to back passes my old 6 pack hood was .15 faster than my cowl.

Thankxx guys..........The ONLY way a cowl goes on my dart is if it`s way quicker. I may cut a 6-pack scoop in the middle and narrow it unless you guys think that would hamper it`s design for air flow.

I know even on the 6pk scoops I heard it helped to just raise the opening a small amout of about 1/4 to 1/2" like on the 6pk scoops. Just to get the opening off the hood and raised any does help from what I hear. In other words have it so the bottom of the scoop opening is not right on the hood as I believe it works better to raise the scoop some even if only a 1/4" to get the scoop up in the air stream and get the opening off the hood itself. Like what the snorkel scoops did in Pro Stock in the 70's. Actually going by that standard means my Max Wedge scoop really dont work good at all the way it is like they were stock. I believe the trick on the front open scoops is to get the scoop up in the air flow better as flat on the hood is not as good air flow into the scoop. Ron

You can see on this pic how my Max Wedge scoop is right on the hood which does not work to good from what I know. And then my buddies areo scoop you can see where it is lifted some off the hood so the opening is not flat on the hood. This seems to work better by the way the air flows over a hood. Ron

We have talked on this before so you know how I feel
on this.. but if you do the string from the front of
the hood to the roof line and stay above it your in
clean air... I havent had much work with the cowl scoops
yet but I have a cowl now on my Rampage and will start
testing this summer

I remember...............I heard about the scoop opening needing to be at the BOTTOM of the scoop entrance but on a driver, I probably can`t get away with it but maybe one of those old-skool pro stock scoops could work.

On a daily driver I would at least try to get a portion
of the inlet above that line...any bit will help...
remember that you can move the inlet forward and get
above it... thats why you see some GM cars with the
opening right near the front

Dom just thinking out loud here wile having a couple So I hope it don't turn into a fest on me

Hows 'bout (I'm not a fan of them either) a cowl scoop closed off at the back with 2 custom air inlet scoops on each side in the front.

Maybe you could graft something like a pair of Cuda or Chally style scoops in there. Who knows maybe the nose of your 6 Pack scoop can be grafted near the front.

It would be low and street friendly and pick up some air from the nose of the car.

It would certainly be original

Or maybe I need

A car's nose (in the '60s-'70s) pops the high-pressure air up in an arc that hits the top half of the windshield. That's why there's lower pressure at the cowl. The air closest to the hood is not effective for ram-air; about an inch above the hood is where you start to get into high pressure. There's a drag penalty for too big, too high, too large an opening. Ducting air from the grille area is pretty effective, but it gets heated on its way to the carb, and intake holes & packaging can be a problem.
Look around on the web for the aero test pics on the Mopar Missile Duster, where they tried different scoops.
