I just purchased a 440 from a 1967 Imperial. I was pretty excited since it was a 78,000 original mile motor. Checked the block casting date and it was 10*5*67 so I was expecting 915 heads. I just got it pulled apart today and found open chamber heads. The part number is hard to read and needs more cleaning, but looked like 26438062. The closest I can find listed anywhere is the 2843904 listed as a 68 440 head. What's more, the ID pad is stamped D440, with 10 30 bellow that and a sideways A stamped to the right of it. Wasn't D a '68 block? Anyone have any ideas? Really bummed about it not being closed chamber heads...

The 10-5-67 was a solid clue, 68 engine production started arounf the fifth or sixth month of 67... And yes D is 68...

I keep reading that an A on the ID pad means oversized bores. But has anyone seen the A off to the right and stamped sideways before?
Just seems odd that a '67 casting date 440 would have such a late assembly date and be stamped for a '68 model year but be found in a 67 car.

The car is 46 years old, lots of stuff happens in 46 years... Maybe it had a piston come apart under warranty in 68... Maybe it had a rod knock in the 70's... Whatever happened the engine got swapped...

Yup, bad assumptions...The D indicates a 1968 model year engine. The casting date is WAAAAAY too late for a 1967 model year car. Post the engine ID pad information, all of it, and any partial VINs that are stamped into the block. Engine got swapped at some point, or else the car really was a 1968.
R. The heads are 2843906 casting nuber heads, otherwise known as "906 heads". They are what I'd expect to see.
Now each head has a casting date somewhere on it, the last digit should be a 7 for the 1967 date of the casting.

Somebody swapped the motor or maybe the car is a 68. I don't think the average "mopar guy" on moparts knows what a 67 Imperial looks like.
67 Imp. Notice the lack of side lights.

Thanks for the info guys. It wasn't my car so I can't check it all out now as well as I'd like. I decoded the fender tag (took a pic of it when I bought the motor) and it says '68. The owner said it was titled as a 67 and when I saw the '67 casting date I assumed he was correct.
I'm still having a little trouble with the block ID pad as it seems a little different than the pictures/decoding diagrams I'm seeing. I'll try to take a picture of it tomorrow, but it looks like this:
--------------------------- -D440 - - A - -10 30 - --------------------------- ...but the A is off to the far right side and stamped sideways. That's it.

It's a 68 440 assembled on 10/30/67 , A means it is bored .020 oversize.
For some reason many people confuse the casting date for the actual model year of the engine , while that may hold true for the majority it is not the rule.

Model year and Calender year have nothing to do with each other.
the 440 premiered with the 66 MODEL YEAR Chryslers.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.
