Find a set of pushrods out of a '70's 318 motor and try them for a test.

Those wont work because they are a ball ball pushrods and those rockers require ball cup pushrods,

RIGHT you are, my bad! I was thinking 318 would be the right length, but forgot about not having the cup even though we were talking about 273 adjustable rockers. Where's the geezer icon! Problem started with hydraulic lifters that are different height than the original solids. Does the OP or anyone else have the original 273 solid lifter to measure its height against a hydraulic that is in there now??

do you happen to know what stock length solid push rods are, vs hyd ? I'll pull my rods and check the length first.

Not sure but I would say that they would be about the same as the ones that comp offers for solid cam applications which is 7.497" Bottom line if you use the pushrods on the Summit or Jegs links you can eliminate this potential problem

I added this jegs link as it explains it a little better http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp-Cams/249/7821-16/10002/-1

The rocker ratio is the same, nominally 1.5. Have you checked and double-checked the firing order?
Do it first, then:
If you have an inductive timing light, idle the engine and put the inductive clamp on each plug wire. An even series of flashes means that plug is firing. Skipping flashes or no flashes means that plug isn't.
R.

Just to clarify, skipping flashes or no flashes means a bad plug wire .

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

thanks too all, and it appears stock length rod is 100 thousands longer than the ones in my engine.OK, gang, thanks for all the advise, help, info, etc...
After doing & checking all that you have provided, I removed the valve covers to re-look at pushrods. They were new in appearence, and after checking more saw one loose. So I looked closer and realized one was "broke" the "Y" ball/cup top 3/8" of one rod had complete come seperated from the shaft and had mushroomed the shaft top approx at least 1/32" or more. So Now I will look for one pushrod for hyd ilfter but ball end rocker, for a short time until I buy a complete set from ? any suggestions here ?
Summitt ?
thanks

Make sure you adjust the rockers with the lifters on the cam's base circle..low side.
