In another sure sign that Pomona is just around the corner, newly crowned NHRA world champion Allen Johnson is testing in Bradenton, Fla., along with a handful of other Pro Stock drivers. On Wednesday, Johnson drove his Mopar Dodge to three consecutive 6.53 runs, all at more than 211 mph, to lead the pack. While Johnson’s performance was totally expected, he had company as fellow Dodge driver V. Gaines matched him step for step with three more 6.53 runs and an early-shutoff 6.54 for good measure. Gaines also topped 211 numerous times behind the wheel of his Kendall entry.

Johnson’s teammates, Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Vincent Nobile, were solidly in the 6.5s with their J&J-powered Dodges on Wednesday. Coughlin wheeled his JEGS.com entry to a best of 6.56 with a string of 6.57s thrown in for good measure. Nobile, whose Mountain View Tire Avenger now carries the No. 3 on its window signifying last year’s third-place finish, posted a best of 6.56 and checked in with runs of 6.57 and a pair of 6.58s. Rodger Brogdon, in his new Camaro, recorded a pair of 6.56 runs, and former four-time champion Greg Anderson ran 6.55 and 6.58 in his Summit Camaro. Also testing was the new Stellar Motorsports Camaro Pro Stock entry with former Comp racer Curt Steinbach behind the wheel as well as the mountain-motor entries of Pete Berner and John Montecalvo.

Greg Anderson's incredible run now stands as the quickest, but unofficial, run in Pro Stock history.
Anderson, driving the Summit Racing Equipment-sponsored Camaro, covered the Bradenton Motorsports Park racing surface in 6.460 seconds at 215.15 miles per hour. He returned later to run a 6.48, 214. The current Pro Stock records are 6.47, 214 by Jason Line.
The Mopar duo of Allen Johnson and Jeg Coughlin Jr. ran a pair of 6.49s right behind Anderson's 6.48.

It shaping up to be a Prostock battle for the ages. If Johnson and CO can bring home the title once again, it will have finally broken the GM strangle hold on the class for good.
