Would like to know what the higher priced gas had for octane rating in and around 1970. Thanks.

92-94 depending where you got it.

I think Sunoco might have even been higher. Not sure.

Love them 68 MOPARS! GTS 340 auto, Charger R/T 440 4-speed, Superbee 383 auto, GTX 440 auto, D100 (new front frame 5.7 hemi - in process), Formula S 340 4-Speed A/C (it's green), 383 auto Roadrunner (maybe a hemi - waiting) and a 68 W200 Power Wagon. Drivers: 07 Cummins and 14 Ecodiesel 4x4.

I can't attest to the reliabilty of this source but I found this report online http://resources.metapress.com/pdf-preview.axd?code=v714477wv0462587&size=larger (click on the page when it opens. It'll get bigger!)
They said it ranged from 91 - 97 in 1958 to 93 - 103 in 1970. I didn't read the whole thing; too many big words LOL.

At one point Sunoco had a dial where you could select your grade up to 104 Octane IIRC. My Uncle bought a brand new 1968 GTX when he came home from Nam and we always went to get gas at the same place.

Back when I was in high school, I used to fill up my 70 GTX with Skelly 103 octane.

in general, premium was rated at 100 octane and regular was around 92 maybe 93. sunoco 260 was around 102-103. there was a sunoco 270 in some limited areas and some Pure stations had access to the roundy-round track stuff. another thing to keep in mind is that octane ratings were different back in 1970.

I recall the same Lew. I think that the octane was rated using the Research method only verses RM2 as today

The fuel was definitely different in the 70s, but the highest octane I ever saw was a station near San Jose in 1977, 100 octane.

Sunoco 260 was the highest pump gas you could get
it was 104 octane.
i'm pretty sure that Shell was next at 100 rated octane.

Here, premium was 100 octane and regular was 90. There was no mid grade.
That was at every station in the area. Everybody's premium had 100 octane.
Gas wars were not unusual and many times I got premium for 25.9 cents a gallon.

I remember 100 (research) octane as normal. Today, octane ratings are the average of research and motor octane ((R+M)/2). Research octane is about 8 points higher than motor octane so 100 octane in 1970 terms would be about 96 octane with today's R+M/2 ratings.

Remember how it SMELLED different? I mean as a kid in the 60's I remember smelling the WONDERFUL aroma even as you pulled up to the pumps. It was heady, clean. Smelled like it would Taste good. Nothing like today. Anyone else remember that or am I just in my own little world?

A little after hours siphoning maybe???

But you are right in that it did have a distinct smell to it.

Yea, the old Sumoco pumps had a sliding dial (left to right) that went from 100 (I think) to 260, and had several steps in between, so you could get in between grades. The 260 in our area was 104 octane and most of the guys who raced at "75 and 80" and "Aquasco Raceway" in Maryland used it. You'll never see that octane from a pump again!

More than once. A kid learning the basics of siphoning in the 60-70's was a dose of tetraethyl lead! I am ok really,,,,no last effects......really, no really.

All it took was for me to swallow gas once while siphoning back in the late '60s and I haven't done it since.
That night was brutal, on both ends, for me.
I have used pumps ever since.
