Is there a way to ID a MP 509 cam visually? I have 2 cams boxed up and I know one of them is a 509.

Not a stinky chance, thanks to Mopars great marketing and sells people I would stick them in a motor and check the cam timing at the lifters That is the only way I know to find out which one is which I had a 383 motor which was suppose to have a Mopar 509 hydraulic cam in it, it turned out to be a 533 hydraulic, I ended up calling Mopar tech to see if there was some paint markings or other was of I.D. the Mopar cams, they said "nope, sorry"

I probably don't even need to go that far now that I think about it. Its going to be the bigger of the 2.

How will you be measuring that???

It will make a difference. It can be determined by some simple measurements though. But sometimes bigger, as you state isnt always bigger.

Do you have a dial calipers or a zero to one inch micrometer? If so measure the hieght of the lobe and then the width at the widest part across the bottom and subtract the smaller of the two from the bigger, that answer is the lobe lift

Yes I have dial caliper, micrometers,& dial indicators.
If I was capable of leaving the house I would already have this done.

Base to tip using a 1-2" micrometer 1.552
base measurement 1.218
1.552-1.218 = .334

Sounds like I have the right cam.

Typical Mopar brand cam quality ,-.005 lobe lift= -.008 valve lift. 4 % off to start with out of the box

Maybe it is time to accurately check all the lobes Maybe that rascal is worned If it is, toss that rascal away Are the top(peaks) of the lobes worn all the way across or half way worn across If all the way across look at them real closely for pitting and discoloration, it pitted or discolored drop that rascal from shoulder level flat to the ground so it breaks it into two piecs so nobody can use it

Cam doesn't appear to be bad by appearance but perhaps your right. I broke out the micrometer and measured one lobe it was .331. I proceeded to slide the micrometer across the rest of the lobes some were tighter others looser.

I guess back to the drawing board.
