Got a stock 727 im gonna put behind the race 383 in my demon and I was wondering what are some basic upgrades I can do to the tranny? The motor is nothing special old trw pistons, race cam and stock 906s. The transmission needs to be forward shift pattern (I have a nice forward cheetah shifter and locker down shift cable already) but other than that I am open up to suggestions to beef it up.

Thanks guys!

i'd run it as is. ur not making big power. just check the line pressure.

If the trans is in good shape, I'd install a TF-2 kit and let 'er rip.

Get a good overhaul kit from Mr. Cope at CRT Transmissions. I bought an over haul kit from him and it was worth the money. I have a 383 and he told me what I needed.

I agree on good valve body/kit, deep pan, cooler, and a 4 plate high drum, 3.8 or higher lever. All of these are cheap upgrades. I've run hundreds of passes with this basic combo in low 10 second cars.

1) Get the best manual valve body you can. I am not familiar with the FWD ones.
2) 3.8 front band lever
3) Set the clutch pack clearances: 0.065-0.100" front, 0.025-0.035" rear
4) A good trans cooler to go with the racing torque converter

Thanks guys

How much would you guys say that a kevlar flex band helps? They are like 35 bucks from Mancini's. I was thinking maybe a shift kit, kevlar flex band and a deep pan. If I was gonna spend money upgrading the valve body I would only wanna buy a reverse manual but like I said before I already own a nice forward pattern cheetah shifter. Don't wanna blow alot of money right now as I'm just a lowly college student who's wife ia nice enough to let play just a little lol

You've already got a good vb.. If the tranny is good, I wouldn't even bother rebuilding it.

my .. replace the stock servos and acummulator with billet pieces(Sonnax,Superior or moparts member sales them), put a max wedge governor in, 4.2(or 3.8) band apply lever and a deep pan with the screened filter.

What about a "Blocker tube" for the servo??

Or is that not needed with a manual valvebody?

NO KEVLAR for the front band , rear band will be ok but NOT the front band ..

Solid band is better than a Flex , a Hi engery Flex is a good band for the front .

As far as blocking the servo , your choice, the servo dampens the rear clutch applying.

I used to block it but took the advice of John K. and no longer do.

I've never blocked a servo.. learned that from an old timer many years ago....

who happens to have invented some of the very things were discussing

I won't say who it was and what it was, him and his partner did. Waiting for MCG to talk with him since Hot Rod and Mopar Muscle don't seem interested.

How is solid band better than the flex? Carbon fiber flex band will hold 1000hp with correct line pressure and 4.2 lever. Of course you can use solid but it more expensive.

Only problem what i have seen is 48re transmission that has 5.0 lever, it will stretch the flex band in 100000miles so you need to adjust it more often.

This rebuild doesnt need much magic with this engine. If its on a tight budget, tear it apart and check what you need.

master kit, 3.8lever, good quality front band, proper clearances and Transgo tf2 kit. Sometimes the stiff rear servo spring(comes with the kit) blows the retainer out, use stock spring, will work ok.

I feel the solid front band releases quicker/better than a flex band during the 2-3 shift. No data, just my 2-cents.

It may not be needed in all applications. Like a low-perf daily drive to the grocery store.

Didn't the early strap bands have problems with ripping apart in hp apps? I never broke any but heard the stories....

Here is a pic of a servo piston I removed from my trans

I have also seen them break at the outer lip.

I'm a machinist by trade & I live at the bottom of the earth so I machined my own billet pistons but you should have them available close by so change it out while you are fitting your deep pan & sleep at night.

Though I do have a billet rear servo in my street car. None of my cars have ever broken a stock servo. Also I've used every type of band be it flex or Kevlar. Kevlar will destroy an aluminum drum. I've found them all to work with steel drums. The stock style Rabestoes tan clutch's work very well also. No need to spend a lot in your case. The valve body is the key.

I worked as a maintenance machinist years ago. Wish I still had access to a mill and lathe.

Machined a fixture for holding governors in a lathe and have several different rpm governors made up.
My roadrunner(Hemi street car) upshifts at about 6300@WOT when left in drive
