Marine 440 could be reverse rotaion , cam should be different , possibly valve springs , boats don't get driven like passenger cars. Big thing to look out for is the cooling system type , you don't want one that was raw water cooled , meaning the water the boat is in goes thru the engine , especially if it was used in SALT WATER .
Difference between HP and non HP in a car , the 2 letters stamped H and P and depends on the year but mainly it's , the cam , carb tuning , valve springs , curve of the distributor , oil pan capacity , windage tray or not , exhaust manifolds , 67 - 71 the difference was roughly 25HP ....

Actually the crankshaft and everything attached is run backwards compared to a car motor.
It runs backwards if it is RH rotation, not all Marine 440s are. There are two things that don't run backwards on a RH motor, the dist and oil pump.

No it would be the camshaft and the starter would just spin the engine over in the opposite direction, but the crank does have the knurling for the rear main seal in the opposite direction also.
Marine/Industrial engines were assembled to better tolerances.
