I've got a friend with a '97ish Dodge Avenger, and I was talking with him yesterday about it, and ended up with a question-

Does the Avenger with the 420a use the same transmission as a Neon? Is it the same engine as the one from a Neon?

I think both are true- he has another buddy ranting that because it's based on a Mitsubishi Galant platform, even though the engine is a 420A and the trans is on the opposite side of the car from where a Mitsu trans would be in the engine bay, he insists that both the engine and transmission are different than those in Neons.

It came down to this- He wants to put a SRT-4 drivetrain into his Avenger, and other guy thinks that swapping in a 4G63 (DSM) engine/trans would be easier. I find that hard to believe when I see people going from 420As in Neons to the 2.4 from time to time and was previously told they mount exactly the same

So... anyone know?

Can't answer your question exactly but the 97 Avenger I had with a v6 auto had a data plate under the hood that stated the engine was sourced from Japan and the tranny from the US.

I think the 2.0 4cyl that came in the Avenger is more closely related to the 2.4 in the SRT-4 than the 2.0 from a 97 vintage Neon.

They are different. The eng in the Neon is a Chrysler & the Avenger has a Mitsubishi eng. Both are the same liters but that is it. Funny thing is if we were talking about a Stratus the answer would be yes and no. The Stratus 4dr has the same eng as the Neon but the 2dr is also built on the Mitsubishi Galant platform has the Mitsubishi eng.

Why not use a turbo Eclipse engine or turbo Laser engine?

Those engines are matched more closely to the year of your buddies Avenger and made 210ish hp stock. Not much less than the 2.4 SRT/4 engine.

Incorrect. The NA 2.0l in the 90's Avenger/Sebring/Eclipse/Talon is essentially the same as the 2.0l DOHC used in the 90's Neons with some differences. The turbo 2.0l used in the Eclipse/Talon is a Mitsubishi Motor and shares no parts with the 2.0l NA, in fact they are mounted in opposite directions. The 2.0l turbo has the trans on the passenger's side while the 2.0l NA has it on the driver's side.

That said I think the Eclipse 2.0 Turbo would be an easier swap than a SRT engine since the Avenger/Sebring is basically a stretched out Eclipse/Talon so it should mount right in. Now the electronics to support the engine may be a challenge though.
