I forgot. Been too long.

I need to replace the brake shoes and wheel cylinders in my '78 Impala in back, but I don't remember how to measure them. They're either 9x2" or 11x2". Do I measure across the drum, or do I measure the length of the material on the brake shoes? Are they interchangeable if they're length of brake shoe material? I have no friggin' clue. I'm wondering if they are since they're both 2" wide.

Anyone?

It should have some numbers on the drum itself that may clue you in. I believe that you measure across.

Measure drum for diameter, shoe for width, longer shoe (primary) goes toward rear of car, shorter (secondary) toward front. All 4 or 2 depending on config, both sides. Here's a pic for clarification

What part of the drum do I measure for diameter? The inside area where the shoe rides, or the second gap between that area (the "meat", as it were, which is worn by the shoe) and the outer part of the drum? The diameter that gets worn away by the drums was like 9 3/4" and the diameter of the outer-inner area (I'm not coming up with a good name for that) was around 11. So... I'm not sure what to think there.

inside diameter. another way to check is if shoes are still on the backing plate, measure from out side of one to out side of the other
