I killed my stock 9.25, then a Auburn LSD. Been using a Detroit locker for a number of years now, no problem.
But I hear you on the spool thing, plus there's the c-clip issue.

John, locked rear also requires aftermarket axles. Tech may not know you have a welded diff, but if they notice you turning you'll get popped for axles.
Aren't you fast enough now to require aftermarket axles anyway?

I just scored a 9 1/4 with a 3.55 open diff along with a LOC RITE locker that replaces the spider gears in the open carrier. use stock axles, installs with hand tools, locks and unlocks for turns. also fits 85 up large bolt truck axles when the c-clip/carrier change in the 9 1/4 mostly seen used in 4x4 and off road rigs and a few B-body cars, it is very strong and durable with a positive locking for check into the LOC RITE lockers as they have a few to offer. 9 1/4-8 3/4..ect. cheapest way I have found to get a true locker and not R&R the R&P on a 9 1/4 just swap out the spider gears.

Ya big D. section 20, page 14, 2:11 in my 2013 rule book sez it all. Anyway, getting aftermarket axles isn't a problem. Didn't like the detroit locker that was in there. I will look in to the Loc/Rite stuff. It's a good tuff diff that I would like to stick with, but - - - - - .
Something else to consider - LockRites transmit all the power through the crosspin and into the weakest part of the case. Factory LSD's transmit some of the power through the cones or clutch plate tabs into a stronger part of the case.
And don't be surprised if when you install a locking style rear axle that the vehicle develops a hard pull to one side on the launch that you will have to tune out, which is the real reason you are working LSD's so hard.
