This may help, 70 is the same.. It mounts on the top of the bottom flange of the dash below the switch... The screw goes in from the bottom though an oversized hole & into the hole on the solenoid bracket..

OK, I'm confused..... my 70 Roadrunner air grabber car doesn't have any "solenoid" at all. I "thought" that was the electric control system of late'71/early'72 ????

Please chime in anyone who knows for sure.

There should be one, as previously mentioned it is mounted to the top of the flange at the bottom of the dash... It's function is to seal the system when the ignition is on so the scoop works then when you turn the ignition off it opens a port allowing the vacuum to escape closing the scoop when the engine is off...

They are often left out because they fail causing the scoop to not work, replacements aren't cheap & the only thing that use to be available was either used or NOS.. Used you don't know if the replacement is any better than what you have, NOS could be bad to but it surely won't be cheap... Eliminating the solenoid the system works but the scoop doesn't close immediately when you shut the key off, vacuum bleeds back out slowly & the scoop drops in a few minutes...

Yes, they are, as I mentioned in my earlier post

They are now reproduced but they still aren't cheap...

I'm glad they are available but I'm also glad I don't need one..

Edited... I meant to type now but instead typed not... definitely changed the meaning of the post...

Correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the solenoid held the air grabber open if it was open and the key turned off,not bleed off the air?

OMG! I bought my car in 1983 and it came with 13 boxes full of parts. I have this air grabber solenoid, but could never figure out what it was, what it did, etc.

Does anyone have a picture of exactly where it goes?

You learn something every day

me too, I had one of these years ago and I remember putting power to it and it would flow air through the 2 ports, release the juice and it would stop air flow. I don't remember any other vents or ports to bleed air off other than the 2 which hook to the hoses. Besides, you don't need to bleed the vacuum off with the engine off because the engine vacuum holds the AG open. Once the engine is off, intake vacuum goes away and the spring on the AG mechanism would close the scoop. Been a long time since I played around with an AG. $175 isn't too bad if you need one. I used to sell them in the early/mid 90's for $75 cause even then, they were hard to find. Anyway, best musclecar hood ever! IMO

I think it mounts on the lower dash frame over by the glove box, you'll have to check with someone that has a real(true) 1970 n96 plymouth!

While energized the two nipples are a pass through, de-energized, the open side vacuum circuit is bleed off through a hole in the end of the solenoid, a foam filter block was glued over it originally to suppress the noise. The A/G systems vacuum reservoir has a check valve on the manifold side to retain enough vacuum for several up/down cycles after engine off, on a good system with no leaks. BTW, this type of vacuum solenoid valve is pretty common in vehicles of all makes over the years for other functions, if originality/appearance is not a huge concern they can be sourced at salvage yards pretty cheap.

pretty cool little dohicky, I totally forgot about the vac. canister and it's check valve. well designed system. It's been a while since I had an operating AG. A must have for a 70-72 plym. and 71-72 Dodge!
