Probably a stupid quesion but never had a rearend apart before. 489 case, have totally stripped the centersection of everything except for the pinion, looks like some kind of ring holding it in but I don't want to destroy anything. Thanks

It's a light press fit on the bearing, you can either use a press to press it out or a brass drift & hammer it out...Press is nicer especially if you plan to reuse parts...

The large bearing on pinion is a tight pressed fit. Press that bearing off gently and save the shims that are under it.

You can the use a dremmel with a sanding drum to hog it out till it's a slip fit over the new pinion gear and use that to check your pinion depth.

Makes it so much easier than having to press the new bearing on and off multiple times.

Moser (I think, someone does) sells a bearing thats hogged out for this purpose , I went to the hardware store and bought a few flapper sanding rools and honed it out . It made me feel better that the hole was still centered in the bearing .

The first time I did it I used a carbide burr and I was afraid I took too much off one side vs. the other

Reider Racing/Precision Gear/Alloy USA stocks the slip fit checking bearings. I also sell them.
