I had 2 gauge from the battery to the starter in my car with no hot start issues, but I also ran a 2 gauge ground cable from the trunk mounted battery up to the engine just to be safe. I would have gone at least one gauge bigger, but it was free.99.

Stick with 1 gauge and you won't have any problems. Thats what I use ( bought a trunk mount kit ). I also ground to the frame rail just under the trunk mounted battery.

Hey Thump, If ya know the cranking amps for the starter and the length of the run you can look it up... 2g boat cable may work its a little bigger than standard wire.

The cable I have is huge as in over kill and heavy and have seen many cars running with less plus it`s pieced together(cleanly)and it needs to go along w/the glass windshield and side windows and half of the gaudy bulky dash. I don`t plan on doing this crap again and just figured every bit of weight loss gets me that much closer to stompin Sledgehammers et`s w/his BIG motor, heads etc.

I assume you have a mini starter so it should be around 100 amps give or take... you probably wont be over 15 feet so.... 2g will be fine... I think...

Yes, mini starter and don`t think it`s 15 ft. but when I`m ready I`ll remove it and measure it and see if I can even re-route it to make it shorter........thankxxx..........

I weighed my 0/2 cable ( it must be 5/8"). battery to my fire wall bulkhead above the gas pedal was 7lbs. If you really want to go light get some aluminum. I had some laying around the same length was about 3lbs. I figured a no start in the final round wasn't worth 4 lbs.

I think my cable is 20+ lbs or more if I had to guess so it`s probably way overkill and my car has zero problems starting. The alum. idea sounds nice...............

Aluminum is crap.Back in the 80s GM used it for rear lighting.Lots of corosion and breakage.I cant remember how many I had to fix at work.I have a front mount batt and mini starter.I still run 1 gauge cable.Running frt to rear I wouldnt run less than 1 gauge. If a pound or so slows your car you need more motor.Rocky

Buy an 8lb. Lithium battery and put it back up front. You'll save 30lbs from the battery you have now and have 10 less feet of cable. Plus you can remove the cut off switch and save more weight.

I'll bet more mobile homes have been destroyed by aluminum wire than have been taken out by tornadoes.

Aluminum wire is all we use for transmission lines. I haven't seen a lot of those burning down.

Here is a wiring chart we use, if you know how many amps your starter pulls and how long the cable is here's your answer. We use 1 gauge on most everything.

I second the lithium battery, cost more upfront but lightweight and compact. I like the Prolite Lithium batteries www.prolitebatteries.com

MSD says run 2 gauge welding cable.
Also per MSD I run a #4 gauge welding cable from each head to the side of the block where I also run the MSD ground wire and from there run a #4 gauge cable to the neg- side of the battery! Solved a Hi-Speed miss for me a few years back.

I put this in my car 2 years ago and it works great, It is aluminum with a copper coating. They used to sale the 2 gauge red in a 20 ft roll now it's only in a 100 ft, So just buy black and use red heat shrink on the positive side.

My car lost 6.5 lbs.

Dom it' good to run to a insulated stud or bulkhead connector (like dvw showed) at the dash area and feed the rest of the car. That way you are not using the starter as a junction block.

I would use #1 from battery to block, then #2 to starter.

Have fun

Thump the only safe way to do this is with a clamp on amp meter and use the chart... or fuse the cable

Thankxxx everyone.............lots of nice ideas and options to go with and I`ll figure it out soon enuff. I like the insulated bulkhead idea although I don`t totally understand how it isolates the starter but I`ll see if Pettis has something like that or maybe it`s a hardware store deal. Do you run the cable IN the car? I want to keep my batt in the trun cos I went through hell setting it up that way plus it looks "racier" and that`s my gig...............

Dom,
I edited my post and finally got the diagram to post. For anyone else moving your battery to the trunk while retaining the stock wiring harness here is one way to do it. If you can't read it I can email anyone a copy for your own use or you can repost it here in larger print. If this modification has already been posted, sorry for the repost. So here it is again.

Dom,
I edited my post and finally got the diagram to post. For anyone else moving your battery to the trunk while retaining the stock wiring harness here is one way to do it. If you can't read it I can email anyone a copy for your own use or you can repost it here in larger print. If this modification has already been posted, sorry for the repost. So here it is again.

Thank you sir.......

Look close in that link. It is what I had. "copper coated aluminum strands". If it was true 2/0 copper, the only weight saving would be in the insulation. Does this stuff work? I was to chicken to try it.

If you use mil spec wire, you can run 1-2 gauges smaller than commercial/auto wire.

Dom it' good to run to a insulated stud or bulkhead connector (like dvw showed) at the dash area and feed the rest of the car. That way you are not using the starter as a junction block.

I would use #1 from battery to block, then #2 to starter.

Have fun

This is what I am doing. A local hot rod/boat shop`s making me a 15'#1 from batt. to the pos. bulkhead and it will be newer, cleaner and lighter. No stone unturned now co`s there`s no turning back now and I`m out of meds........
