I've been messing around with SEM paints to try and get the correct organisol paint look and I think I may of found somthing that might work really well. I first tried spraying SEM trim black without reducing it as I heard it would give you a textured look and it did. The only negative was I had striping with out reducing but the texture looked very close. I then tried the SEM textured paint which was easy to spray and gave it a very correct looking texture with no striping effect and I then went over it with the trim black reduced to give it the correct color and it gave me the look I wanted. I only tested it on the rear inner door panels as there suposed to be organisol on most v24 71 duster. I'll post some pics Friday of my hood done this way. I should be able to wipe the hood with a rag with no problem and the decal will stick to it very easy.

It's not perfect but it gets you pretty close and you can still clean it with a cloth and not have all the lint pulled off it. Before I was just using trim black reduce one to one and it looked good and cleaned really nicely but it didnt have the correct textured look like factory. Now it looks alittle closer. Here's a picture with out the texture under the trim black.

That looks great.

Do you know how it will hold up on the exterior of the car?

I think this would be close for the textured paint that goes on Sweptline trucks.....

It's almost time to shoot my V24 Duster and my paint guy wants to use SEM hotrod black. Any thoughts on this? I was thinking if he held the gun back on the final coat maybe I can get a slight texture? Looking at original areas of my car, the texture is a very fine and light. Most examples I see are way to course texture. I need help! what should we use short of the expensive and hard to apply Roger Gibson organisol. I really dont want him to paint it twice like Ryan used above, would like to keep it simple so they dont mess up. Any suggestions appreciated

Why don't you call Roger Gibson and get Organisol ?

Im confused why people go across country for organisol (or suede black, dash paint)?
I go to my PPG supplier and they have no issues mixing to the old book formulas.

Maybe I'm just fortunate that my PPG house has everything they need?

Is the goal here to use something other than lacquer with texture?

Or is it to find something thats looks correct but is more durable than the original?

Unsure that the 2 paint solution has the correct texture, but it does look pretty good, and remember that MOST will not be able to distinguish the difference.

With the 71 Duster you are basically doing a two tone paint job and Im concerned with lifting the urethane overspray. Also it looks like the new formula organosol can come out heavy texture which I dont want with the large wedge decal on the hood. How is the 9355DCC urethane from anyone who has used it? Does it have the slight metalic?

That Gibson/Baldason organisol looks great on TA/AAR hoods.

He has a point of concern with the large 340 sticker. I've never seen a sticker laid on that Gibson/Baldason organisol.

I use it all the time depending on yours or the owners preference it needs to be flattened to match the original look. Here is a pic of a hood I just did, owner wanted it to have a nice "glow" rather than the total flat of the original laquer organisol. I flattened it about 15%.

Thanks Mike that 71 hood looks like what I want. Im afraid of using the lacquer based since it may lift paint without special primer under it. So are you saying that you use the PPG DCC9355 urethane product? This has metallic correct? Is the 30% flattener in the paint or reducer? also what reducer ratio do you recommend and any tips on spray pattern. I want a very light texture.

1.Yes I use that product
2.Check the formula at your paint supplier when they mix it up, they can add metalic if it is not there.
3. Again check with the supplier. The flattening agent you have to get from them. They can tell you how much to add to get to 30% or you can do it. Just make note of what amount you use so you can duplicate it if needed.
4. I reduce it according to the p-sheet. No need to do anything strange with this paint unlike the original organisol.
5.Just shoot it with light coats. If you want more texture wait longer beyween coats and shoot it farther away from the surface. I call it shooting it dry as opposed to wet coats.

I just scuffed the hood on that red rr taped it off and shot it. No lifting or reaction problems and that paint was about 3 weeks old. WAY easier to use than the original stuff.
