I would like to buy a mig welder to do some body panel repair on my roadrunner. I am on a $950 budget. I dont seee my self using it all the time and but do want a good name brand so I can get parts if needed. I looked at the Hobart 210 MVP around $850 and the Hobart handler 140 arond $500. It looks ok I think. You all have any ideas ?
Thanks!
Dave

My advise, check your local Craigslist.... Make sure you get one with gas.... Miller, Lincoln & Hobart all make decent stuff with good support...

Do a search as this comes up at least once a month here. Nothing wrong with the Hobart if it meets your needs, just be sure to get one with the shield gas setup.

I own a Miller 130XP.

It's one of the best 110v welders out there.

It's an older model but they can be found used on Craigslist, snatch one up if you get the chance.

It has serrated lower/smooth upper drive rollers.

I put many miles of wire through mine.

A 200 amp welder is too big/much for thin sheet metal repair.

Use a copper bar to back up thin/butt welds, it'll help absorb the heat

BTW, Here's one being sold locally. welder, tank, gauges, cart...

Both of the Hobart models I mentioned have the shield gas set up but I will have to buy a bottle. Any suggestions on Name and models I am only going to use it on body panel repair and nothing else that I can think of will not get used much at all. Dont feel like spending extra money if I dont need to.

What ever you decide on make sure to get one with a rheostat for adjustment of both current(??) AND wire speed , I don't like the units with a 4 position switch for either OR both.

I have a Lincoln 110v unit, bought it when they first came out. The Lincoln units sold at the big box stores are the type with 4 position switches .

Ok looks like I need a Mig welder with what they call an infinate voltage adjustment not one with presets on it. Now is there a good name brand that has these infinate settinggs for under mt $950 budget.
I looked at the miller 180 and 211 is there another good name brand that has there kind on infinte settings at a better price?
Thanks!

If you are not in a tremendous hurry, you can get a lot more welder by buying used from craigslist. I'm very happy with my Lincoln PowerMig 255 - it's an extremely versatile welder that will be able to handle most any MIG welding job you have. I found it on our local craigslist a while back for $1000 and it even had a spool gun attachment to allow for welding aluminum. There was no way I could have purchased that much welder new, as it would have been more than double the price..

As said, your local craigslist, but also local pawn shops. Dont be afraid to ask them whats the lowest they'll go either. T could of bought a lincoln plasma cutter and welder w/gas together on a custom cart for $999. Didn't have a need at the time. Still kicking myself.

i bought a lincoln sp135+(at least i think thats what model it is) about 12 years ago. it works great for everything i`ve ever done. put on a few quarter panels, lots of patch panels, replaced sections of frame, welded an 88 dakota front clip on my 47 desoto ect. it has never given me a single problem. there are no presets on the wire feed or amps, you can put them where ever you want. i always wonder how i did anything with out it. after you get it, your first project to get yourself used to welding is make a rolling cart for it out of steel.

The XP120 mentioned above is a great 120v MIG. I learned to weld using one. Currently use a Hobart 175. This is a great general purpose welder, will do light gauge body work up to thicker (1/2" or so) metal if needed. I fabricate tractor implements. You never know what you might need a welder for. I fabricated this from tube steel.

I purchased a Miller - matic 140. Great little machine for sheet metal and light steel. Got a cart, gas, and helmet and kept the total price under $1000. It has variable settings so you can dial in exactly where you need it. I had no welding experience and was able to jump right into my car after just a few practice welds.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Just bought the same unit, with cart/bottle/etc., under $1k as well. Nice unit!

I've had my POS Snap On welder for over 20 years.. Replaced the main board three times in the first ten years... The last board has been hanging in there.... So first don't buy a Snap On welder... Second I just purchased a Hobart 175 with the cart, gas & auto dimming mask, a lightly used 80 gallon single stage compressor with a couple 100' rolls of hose & a hose reel plus a Harbor Freight milling machine with lots of tooling as a package deal off Craigslist got it all for $1200..... Watch C/L..

I have used the crap out of my Miller 180 for the last 4 years or so. Mainly on frames and 1/4" steel. Just now trying it out on some sheet metal. However, its never let me down, and typically tips, wire, etc... are in stock locally. Havent needed any other parts. Knock on wood.
