I just started up a fresh 318 , it came with the project i got , and oil just gushed from the oil filter. It does not have the 90 degree adapter just the factory adapter/plate on the block. I pulled the filter and plate off and there was no gasket between the block and plate. so i am guessing thats the problem. Should there just be one large gasket or should there also be another smaller one where the threaded piece goes in that holds the.plate on?

Just the large ring gasket under the flat plate. No smaller gasket of any sort is used on either side of the threaded nipple. As noted the 2 smaller gaskets plus the ring gasket in the 3 piece kit are used in the 90 deg adapter only. Fel pro offers the large ring gasket seperately (#70078 iirc) & reportedly it is slightly thicker than the ring gasket that comes in the MP 3 piece gasket kit which is better & the single gasket would for sure be cheaper so call your parts house & see if they have one on hand. Do make sure the block circular recess & the plate are squeaky clean.

Thanks, thats what i was trying to figure out. I wanted to get it right.
.its the only gasket i didnt think to check. Since i noticed no one put any gasket or sealer on the water pump either i thought i should go over it. Its my sons car and we have been working on it for a couple years. I wanted to get it fired up for christmas for him . It did start right up but we shut it off when i seen oil running out, but at least we know it runs.

you can get the gaskets individually from the dealer too.

I got the fel pro gasket 70078 but it dosent fit. It is a rubber o ring , not quite big enough to fit. I think the original was not rubber either, i pulled one out of an old 360 to look at.
I still need the gasket and cant figure out what i need to order.

Yes there is a gasket but a very important thing to do while you have the plate off is to add more holes.

It is very common for the 318's to have 4 small holes to let the oil flow from the filter to the block. 340's and 360's had 6 or 8.

either get a 340/360 plate or add some holes to the 318 plate. That is simply not enough oil flow. Your bearing will love you for it.

I never knew there was a different part number for the plate. 2402103 was the only number I could find. Do you have a part number for the one with more holes? Now I have seen the billet aluminum ones with more holes but they were aftermarket.

I have a kit for that, #340-K5
You won't find a better quality material than this.
Available from Competition Wedge or Marsh Performance/ Moparts Connection. I think Mancini plans to carry them sometime this year.
Send me a PM if nobody has them in stock.

I chased an oil leak from that same part on a 360 that I built for a truck about 20 years ago. I was laying under the running truck when the leak became major and splashed onto my headers...I did not know that I could move so fast!!

I do not have a part number with me but they used the same plates on the LA and Magnum small block. You an get one from a Junkyard 5.9 and use it or just drill a few extra holes. Here is a picture of a 318 vs 340/360 plate.
