I just finished installing a 440 in 74 cuda with a A833 trans. The car was originally a 318 car with a 904 trans with small yolk, 8 3/4 rear with 276 gears. I thought that the drive shaft would fit,boy was that a mistake. The drive shaft is too long. I looked at my sons 73 with a 340 727 trans and a larger yolk , it looks like 8 3/4 323 gears and the drive shaft is shorter. I did look up on the computer and it looks as if the 73s drive shaft would fit.But I also saw another drive shaft for the 440 set up from the factory. What is the proper driveshaft length and size?? And does anyone know where I can find an original driveshaft?? Thanks

904 trans. is SHORTER than 727/833 trans SO the original driveshaft will be too long with the 833.
Yes you need a 727/833 with 8-3/4 rear shaft.

Looking in a HOLLANDER interchange manual - it looks like '72 was the last year for a big u-joint E-body driveshaft.

1973-'74 Barracuda/'Cuda - ALL
43-25/32" lg. x 3-1/4" dia. w/727 & 8-3/4" rear axle part #2996134 (also used in some '71-'72s w/small u-joints)
47-7/8" lg. x 3-1/4" dia. w/904 & 8-3/4" rear axle part #2996138 (also used in some '71-'72s w/small u-joints)

Factory E-body 4-speeds (PP833) are the same lenght as 727s & use #2996134

Factory E-body 3-speeds (PP230?) are the same lenght as which automatic transmission?

thanks guys it looks like what you found is the same that I found. Though there seems to be a 43.60 and a 43.79.The 43.60 is supposedly the big block one though the 340 43.79 might fit also. But its not easy to find one. I know I can't use the current one I have for the 904 trans. Guess I could sell that one hopefully to offset the cost of the one I need. Thanks

You're better off having one made up locally at a powertrain shop...Take some measurements and you'll have a shaft made up for exactly what you need for your car...There's way too many factors involved to just buy a used driveshaft and hope it works..At this point there's no reason to worry about an original unit there obviously was'nt any for 74...If the one you have is too long you could even have that one cut down and rebalanced... That would be the cheapest way out of all the options...

X2 what Screamin said. If you can find a shaft that gives you 3/4-7/8" play with the common aftermarket flat extension housing seal you're good otherwise get a longer one & mock it up & give the dimention to the driveshaft shop & I'd R&R the ujoints yourself (holler if you want some tips) unless you really trust them to be conscientious with the ujoint install then have them shorten and balance it. EDIT as said the 904 & 727 yokes are different & iirc the 4sp/727 yokes are the same but check on that if needed
