Hey Merry Christmas to you! Back when I was in school I worked at a typrwriter shop (getting old huh). We cleaned the platens (rubber roller) with a chemical called FEDRON. What it did to the rubber was amazing. It cleaned and softened it and looked new. It did not coat it. I've used it on wiper blades and it worked great. Was planning on getting some to try it on the tires. http://www.teeveesupply.com/product_pages/chemicals/fedron.htmI suspect that you don't want to drink this.

Formula V is what I've been using also. I start using it when the tires are a couple of years old or more, but still have some rubber left on them. Usually give them 3 coats the day proir to going to the track. Works pretty good to get the last bit of use out of them.

I think 8 or 16 oz would do a set of tires. Its been a lond time since working with it, but a little went a long way. It definately softened the rubber. The platens would get hard as a rock on the surface because of constantly being beat by the typing bars. You could not push your fingernail into it. We would wet it with the fedron and lightly (very lightly) sand it. You could then push your fingernail into it. Hope this helps.

I always use WD40 to soften up a set of old slicks.
I thought it was crazy. We've sprayed it on wipe it off between rounds the car picked up almost .05. Its an old trick but works well.

Do any of you guys use tire treatments and if so what do you use and why?
track tac.. use grape and sand the surface with an 80 grit pad to open it up before treating. treat 2-3 times and you will see/feel the effect .. they will be soft and bite hard. a small burnout will really make this pay off huge.. be ready to fix broken parts!
