Hey Merry Christmas to you!

Back when I was in school I worked at a typrwriter shop (getting old huh). We cleaned the platens (rubber roller) with a chemical called FEDRON. What it did to the rubber was amazing. It cleaned and softened it and looked new. It did not coat it. I've used it on wiper blades and it worked great. Was planning on getting some to try it on the tires.

I suspect that you don't want to drink this.

I tried Pledge, but this isn't what I was wanting the treatment for. I just bought a set of used slicks and they look and feel "hard". I have used Formula V to treat the tread area in the past. I'm out of it now and need to buy some more. Looking for suggestions on other products, if any.

I looked on their web site. They only seem to sell it in small quantities. I wonder how much would be needed to do 2 tires? I'm actually looking for something to soften the tread area of the slicks, not really concerned about cleaning them.

Formula V is what I've been using also. I start using it when the tires are a couple of years old or more, but still have some rubber left on them. Usually give them 3 coats the day proir to going to the track. Works pretty good to get the last bit of use out of them.

I always use WD40 to soften up a set of old slicks.

I think 8 or 16 oz would do a set of tires. Its been a lond time since working with it, but a little went a long way. It definately softened the rubber. The platens would get hard as a rock on the surface because of constantly being beat by the typing bars. You could not push your fingernail into it. We would wet it with the fedron and lightly (very lightly) sand it. You could then push your fingernail into it.
Hope this helps.

I thought it was crazy. We've sprayed it on wipe it off between rounds the car picked up almost .05. Its an old trick but works well.

Trac Tac has a few diff products for dirt or asphalt tires check them out they have alot of good info, Track Claw is good also, age and heat cycles remove the oils from the tire. i dont think ppl pay as much attention to the tires as they should, they are the first contact on the track that make the suspension do its job

I always put a couple heavy coats on the night before and I dont wipe it off either but I have seen some guys do it awhile before they make a pass.

Amazing what it does to a old pair of slicks.

Purple Power or Castrol Super clean. I took a brand new set of oval track tires, knocked the new off with a wood file then washed the tread with purple power. It made them as sticky as my set of MT drag radials.

track tac.. use grape and sand the surface with an 80 grit pad to open it up before treating. treat 2-3 times and you will see/feel the effect .. they will be soft and bite hard. a small burnout will really make this pay off huge.. be ready to fix broken parts!

I'm really intrigued about this WD40 thing, mainly because it can be had for allot less money than the other stuff. If I decide to use it, is it necessary to applied it before every race or does it last awhile?
