I'm contemplating a new carb this winter. I've been running an older 830 cfm "race" series carb, list #4788-1. I'm contemplating a Holley Street-HP 950 (#82951). What would you guys look to as the best option for my car?
-451 low deck @ 10.3:1
-RPM manifold
-Stealth heads
-252* / .573 lift solid FT cam
-1-7/8" headers
-Primarily street driven, with 3 or 4 trips to the track per year.

I'm no expert but I think that 830 is a decent match to the rest of your combo. Think the Performer RPM (or the Stealths) would become the cork if you used a much bigger carb. You might gain a little top end but what would you lose in street driveability where the car spends most of its time...

What rear gears are you running?

Is the Holley 4788-1 come with downleg, straight leg or annular boosters? If downleg it might flow more air than the standard earlier models of the Holley 950HP with downleg boosters. If it has annular boosters a carb. with downleg boosters might, probally, will run better through the entire RPM range

I would get with Todd at competition wedge. Last I heard he had a brand new Prosystems 950 fully worked cheap.

4781 DP ought to work well...

IM experince the idle circuit on a 950HP is super fat, on a motor similar to yours. But, Dwayne did tell me that the Street HP carbs do have a lot cleaner idle circuit, more suited to a BB Mope.

The 4788 is a downleg booster carb.
I run 3.91's with 27-1/2" tall tires and a 9-1/2" Dynamic converter.

If you guys think I won't gain anything over the the 830, then I can find somewhere else to spend the money. I just figured it would go a little faster with the bigger carb, and the street HP version should offer good street manners (??).

I have used several Prosystems worked 950 like Todd has on a 350 Chevy and it was crisper than the 600 I took off. Prosystems is the best that why is all i buy for na and nitrous cars.

never having tryed the 830, the 950 hp worked really nice on my 451. i know that there's a point that more carb just is'nt nessary. they say the 950 flows in the 800's anyhow.

I would think that engine could use one of the new
Holley 950... from what I've heard they flow real
good.... the new 850 would be another choice
