Ok...when is the last time your project went smoothly?

I got my rings on the pistons for my 318 and started puting them in.

Well....Once they are in, I noticed this. WTH?

Sooo....replace the piston?

What kind of piston-installation 'technique' do you use in order to spot this after you installed the piston?

I would sand off the sharp edges and plunk it back in.
Maybe switch this piston/rod-assembly with another one if the skirt is on the thrustside of the block.

I think he meant the rings installed onto the piston?

at a minimum I'd dress the edges, but honestly, I'd strongly consider replacing. how do you know that whatever blow the piston took to break the skirt, didn't also distort what's left of the skirt, and now the piston is out of round, or has a high spot that will rub in the bore?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I put the new rings on, them put the piston in the block. I honestly can't tell if this is a new or old condition of the piston.

I will be replacing it.

When the motor was disassembled, there was a lot of carbon. The motor would diesel when shut off (if it was running hot).

Could dieseling cause something like this?

I would think its going to cause an imbalance.

You can tell that it's a fresh break. There is no varnish on the broken edge. Usually this happens when somebody isn't thinking and swings the piston by the big end of the rod. Sand smooth and run it.

I think you have too high expectations of a factory's balance job.

But if one might be worried about an imbalance in a bone stock engine, maybe it's a good idea to break off all the other skirts aswell to get them all the same weight again...

I'd think for a driver you could just sand it/clean it and roll. But a 318 piston can't cost that much can it?

I'd check piston to wall clearance. A stock cast piston doesn't like rattling around in a big hole.

Boy if the piston to wall clearance isnt excessive, deburr it, and run it.

surely isnt gonna be a big deal, Heck some newer designed pistons have 1/3rd the skirt that one has anyways.

I have no idea how it happened... Maybe it was slightly cocked in the cylinder when I was putting it in? This is the only thing I can think of. This is my first time assembling a complete short block by myself so I know I am not a professional at this point.

I priced a new piston at anywhere between $10-20 bucks. This is what I am going to do.

did you recover the broken piece from inside of the engine and have it accounted for???

I have found some crazy stuff tearing down engines others have built or worked on. found 18 pushrods in a 318 one time.

also found a broken piece of piston skirt and no broken pistons.

found 8 rusted core plugs inside block when I removed 8 brass core plugs on a 360 tear down.

i would be looking for that missing piece before i replaced the piston in that hole.
