I'm getting closer to tackling the rear end here in the next couple weeks, I'll be running the hypercoil fiberglass leafsprings and I was thinking about adding a panhard as well, Who out there has done this yet? and lets see some pics!

I bought all the " fixings" to do it but haven't installed it yet. Hyperco said it wasn't necessary?
I'd like to see some pictures of others panhard bars too though.

Works great, did it back in '99. Didn't have a hoist then so no pictures of stuff like that, maybe some day. Might have a picture or 2 that I took of the axle end/brakes and such, but I don't know where they are, some I can't figure out where I put them.

I put a RealXD mini cam under the rear of my car at Willow Springs Raceway to look how much rear end movement there was. Didn't look like much

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfMf9NzpY7E

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLOrFexa6Fk

Maybe it would be better/easier to observe if I had a pointer and a white backgound or white bar going straight down from the frame rail next to the spring edge.

Problem is, the rear end arcs in when in roll. And that would not be flexing movement, just natural movement.

I think if the level of grip is high enough a panhard bar would shine.

Mopar to the bone!!!

Could be so. My 245/50/15ZR tires are very old.

Something new in 275/40/17 size (right side) is next..

Sweet, every one likes a bind that is impossible to find, makes for an exciting year chasing it!

How much side deflection do you get with leaf springs? Seems to me that it would be far easier to screw up the geometry than any minor benefit. I don't remember seeing anything about one in the MP Chassis book or Martin's suspension book. I'll look when I get home and post the results later.

So you've used panhard/J-bar with leaf spring and got a bind?

Is that due from the different arc movements of the panhard rod and the axle with leafsping arc when it rolls?

binds in circle track cars drive you nuts. One indication of them was when we would scale the car and it would not repeat after bouncing and rolling the car. Those made for long nights trying to figure out what was causing it.

There's a local 68 Mustang that autocrosses with a Watts Link and Torque Tube with his leaf springs.

He bought the car new and has been refining and autocrossing it for the last 40+ years!

There isn't a lot of deflection in leaf springs, especially if you're use nylon or urethane bushings. The biggest benefit in using a panhard, or watts, is that if you build the mounts to give you adjustability, you can alter the roll center height which give you the ability to alter corner exit bite of the rear.

However, like pointed out, you want to avoid binding. This means you need to use a soft durometer rubber bushing or even a pivot to allow the springs some room to twist without binding the motion of hte locating device.

FWIW, all the Dodge TA and Plymouth AAR race cars used watts or panhards.

At least the Dodge has decoupled rear shackles. Don't know about the AAR. Meaning the inner race is wider than the bushing so the leaf spring has freedom to move side to side. I think I have a picture somewhere...

I actually have a brand new Panhard rod set assembly that I've never installed onto my Challeneg for autocrossing. I'm aware of a 72 Camaro fellow autocrosser (past SCCA national solo II chamopion) who built his own panhard assembly and he swore that it really made a big difference once he finessed it to adjust the roll-center...his car and mine both ran with similar suspension stiffnesses, as well as Flex-a-Form fiberglass leaf springs (225/inch).... one of these days I'll tackle the installation. The setup I have came from the "California Moparts/Suspension" company ... purchased it ~1988?

I have studied and have pics of the Chall T/A Posey car having its Panhard bar.... and a 69 Vintage Dart TransAm car with the same... i'll try to post the pics...

Where are your pictures? On your computer or on a host site?

On your computer they have to be added as an attachment. On a host web site they have to be added using the [image]* [/image] thingie code.

O.K. I looked through both of them, the MP book mentions the Track Bar or Watts Link, but only for use with a 4 link/coil over suspension. Martin's book discusses override traction bars- a leaf/link arraignment. Both emphasize the need for the leafs to be flat @ normal ride height for handling packages. Seem to me that most of the benefit could be found with solid bushings in front and sliders in back.
