What are the typical reasons that a converter will have cracks in the converter snout? Thanks

They both appear to be full length from the square cut at the end of the snout back to the base on both sides. Thanks for your reply.

Top reason i have seen is from improper removal of the transmission. Ive seen folks try to remove the transmission without unbolting and pushing back the torque converter... that can put the weight of the tranny on the snout/tabs and crack it or snap em off...

did this 2x myself, not a good idea to hang any weight on the TC hub during R&R. but in the JY I figured I was getting a new reman from the get go.
sound like you found the noise on start up...no?

I had the engine supported to the floor, and I unbolted the flex-plate before I unbolted the tranny which was supported by the jack. I did have a leak that was coming from the front of the tranny before I pulled it out. I believe that I pulled the tranny correctly. Thank you for the reply.

thats good,I did not think you broke it on R&R,just saying it can happen. I am sure it was broke causing the leak and noise before you removed it. I have seen them get broke on install just as ez,and I have had a lot of 904 TC snouts fail from hard abuse on daily drivers. some time it wears and just gets weak or from being remaned at the TC shop.

The startup noise/vibration/front leak, and the slipping in forward gears issue seems to point towards the torque converter. The tranny is at the shop right now, so I should find out for sure in a few days. I will admit that I am very hard on the car. I would never be accused of driving it gently.
Thank you both.

a broke TC snout would do all that for sure.
I have had a lot more 904 TC break the snout than 727s. one of the reasons I think the 904 went to the solid hub with machined flats to drive the pump over the notch/tang set up.
good luck, hope there is no more damage other than the TC.

Thanks, but I think there is one more internal issue. The trans locks up while pushing it forward in N (engine off). Then when I push the car backwards about a foot or so and then push it forward again, it frees itself up. Possible broken sprag is the guess so far.
John: Thanks for your reply. The crack started right where you said.

causes? high torque, sticky tires, heavy car, tall gearing....if this a 904 trannny? not uncommon behind a 360 or larger motor...
in my 3950lb 5th ave that I had 3.55's and an A500 in behind a 360 and 255/50R17 BFG KDWS's, the TQ had cracks starting at the corvers of the pump drive slots. never hung the weight of the tranny off of it, but had a fair amount of heavy acceleration, and those tires hooked pretty well....
