First, I am trying to make a man garage and I was working in there last night and I dropped a 12 foot ladder on her 71 Demon. It kills me because the paint on it (was) PERFECT!It was not as bad as I thought or told her.It just put a chip in the paint on the front fender.I think that was all.(couldn't look at it to long)It could have been alot worse. Then,I have the original 340 block on a stand and I took off the plastic cover and noticed there was some surface rust on one of the cylinder walls.(was not a good night)I did not even look at all of them. One was enough to get me mad at myself.I did oil them.Should I have greased them? What is the best way to remove the rust and to keep it from coming back.:(
I am now thinking of putting a bed in the garage, just in case.
THANKS,David

If it is just surface rust you can run a cylinder hone and clean it up.
How you treat the block depends largely on how long it is going to sit there. Generally a good coating of WD40 and wrapping in plastic will keep things from rusting for the short term. There is always Cosmoline (spelling)for longer term storage.

If the rust isn't to bad hit it w/a hone. I did this on my engine and it had some pretty bad surface rust. Ran fine all year when I could keep the trans together.

Is it going to be a while before you get it put together and running? Grease or something like ARP assembly lube might be better than oil for long storage.

Plastic only keeps the dust out. Traps moisture in. Watch the Glad commercials LOL. If its kept inside, your better of covering with cloth so it can breath. You could also get some of those desiccant(sp?) packs. You know like come packed in electronics and cameras and such to absorb moisture. Not sure where you get them MailBoxesToGo?? but here's a link http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&...=4&ct=title Couple large packs laid in the lifter valley should work I would suspect.

Sorry to hear about the Demon.. but as far as the 340 goes.. I agree with what is said about using plastic, but if it were me I would not worry about it. I had a 440 block that was left out (under hood) without a head on it. All four cylinder had water and all four had bad rust. So bad I used sand paper to scuff it back down. Then I put the head on it and fired it up. Maybe I got lucky, maybe not, but that 440 is one of the strongest ones I have seen and its still running. I suppose you will hear all the stories, but if you have just some small rust I wouldn't even bother with a hone.. my

Amsoil has a Heavy duty metal protector that leaves a wax type coating. Check out the (AHM) MPHD Heavy duty metal protector.

If you continue to damage her car your bed may end up in the garage whether you want it there or not.

If it's a motor than is going to get hot tanked anyway, you can always just paint the bores with a rattle can. A guy I know used to do this - never had a problem.

light scuff with a scotch pad should be enough.

I always spray inside my unused blocks with vehicle anti rust oil spray.

Can be bought at auto parts store for same price as any oil spray

Clean it up, find a distributor for CRC chemicals, and tell them you want a can of SP-400. This is basically spray cosmoline, and works well. WD-40, CRC-336, or brake cleaner cuts it right back off. Hope this helps.
