The engine bay is much smaller than the later versions and to go with a BB you will have to do some major cutting and fitting. Fenderwell headers are your only choice. You will have to buy or narrow a rearend to get it under there and I think you will have to do major front end changing to get a disc setup. Your best bet would be to build a small block stroker to get high horsepower in that little body.

A very close friend of mine has an old '66 Barracuda drag car that WAS a straight front axle, 440, 4-speed. He has since brought it back to stock, but it ran for amny years with that set-up.
The early A-body is drastically different than the '67-72 A-body.
Any A-body 8 3/4 will bolt right in. If you don't want to mini-tub and narrow a rear, you will need to use a '65 B-body rear. That will push the wheels out to the edge of the quarter panel, and you will get some more back spacing.
My old '66 Dart drag car has a Hemi slickshift 4-speed. You should build an A-body 4-speed with Hemi guts. That will bolt in and the shifter will fit the '66 floor hump. When you get a trans tunnel floor hump, FORGET the '65 and buy a '66. (similar to the 67-69)
Pedals are unique to '65-'66.
My Dart and nearly all '66 Formula S cars came with Kelsey-Hayes small bolt discs. The swap to '73 4.5" discs is a simple process.
Headers will be home made fenderwells...no exceptions.
The engine bay is 2 inches narrower. this will cause some grief getting the 440 in, but it can be done with some fitting. The K-member was notched in my friends Barracuda...not sure if that was necesary.
Good luck.

www.forabodiesonly.com www.bigblockdart.com a B engine(383/400) will fit with BB HP ex manifolds & I saw a pic of one with the max wedge ex manifolds. 440 will fit with headers

The only real issue is the headers. At this time you are stuck with cutting the fenderwells. As for the 4-speed if you go with a hydraulic clutch you should be good to go.A couple of guys at abodies only are working on the same projects.I'm kinda hanging back waiting to see how they make out. I'm thinking of going 440 4-speed in my 64 Valiant.

Why not put a stroked 340 or 360 in it. Easier to do, you can get over 400 cubes out of one.
