A very close friend of mine has an old '66 Barracuda drag car that WAS a straight front axle, 440, 4-speed. He has since brought it back to stock, but it ran for amny years with that set-up. The early A-body is drastically different than the '67-72 A-body. Any A-body 8 3/4 will bolt right in. If you don't want to mini-tub and narrow a rear, you will need to use a '65 B-body rear. That will push the wheels out to the edge of the quarter panel, and you will get some more back spacing. My old '66 Dart drag car has a Hemi slickshift 4-speed. You should build an A-body 4-speed with Hemi guts. That will bolt in and the shifter will fit the '66 floor hump. When you get a trans tunnel floor hump, FORGET the '65 and buy a '66. (similar to the 67-69) Pedals are unique to '65-'66. My Dart and nearly all '66 Formula S cars came with Kelsey-Hayes small bolt discs. The swap to '73 4.5" discs is a simple process. Headers will be home made fenderwells...no exceptions. The engine bay is 2 inches narrower. this will cause some grief getting the 440 in, but it can be done with some fitting. The K-member was notched in my friends Barracuda...not sure if that was necesary. Good luck.
