In the end, after looking at all the 2003-2006 trucks, I ended up back to a 2001 diesel 2500 6 speed HO quad cab short bed with the NV5600, and 3.55 gears and a few upgrades bolted on....Just seems like a waste to go to the newer G56 with a milder 6th gear, and AAM rear with 3.7's and pay over $10k more...Not to mention dealing with some of the less than scrupulus dealers....Hopefully pick it later this week, got a heck of a drive ahead of me.

GOod job! I do like my 04 but it is too quiet and gets less fuel mileage! That beast will last you until the next idiot gets in your way.
I do like the newer ones, but they aint cheap, and when you really sit down and look at it with the numbers, your paying more all the way around!
Makes me scratch my head some days...Lets see 23mpg in 2001, and now 12 years later, what are we getting?

There is a reason those powerstrokes are so cheap. If I were you Id be be saving for headgaskets/studs, EGR cooler delete, and a FICM. Good luck.

That's why I ended up going with my 01, the prices. I couldn't justify the cost for the newer body style... then factor in parts cost and how little I drive. I also haul a lot of scrap and I'd rather scratch my 01 that has chips already over something much nicer.

Long drive? Where did ya find it? There are a few of those around here, and they are continuing to drop in cost. All the "big shots" shink they need to have the newest truck, and sink tons of cash into wheels, chrome, and dumb crap, then they drive them for 6 months and complain about the mileage. When they should have stuck the money they blew on wheels and chrome on a tuner to get the egr, and particulate filters gone. You can do that in nebraska . back on task, There was a guy here in town who just bought a 2002 2500 quad cab long box with under 100K for less than 8grand. Had a VP44 gone in it, and only needed a pump, lift pump, and lift pump warning light installed. Yea an expence for the get go, but a rock solid truck when done. And Dodge from 1994-2002 I highly recomend an adjustable track bar, and a steering box stability kit, then they are good to go.

Better do it while you can before the EPA kills it for everyone. H&S got popped and I've heard rumor that Mads and SCT have both pulled all their stuff off the market as well.
Glad you were able to find what you wanted. Definitely can't go wrong with a 6-speed 2nd gen.

Bought this one out of Georgia....Drove it home, left the rental down there. Long drive for sure. Going to have to play with the tuner, its very fast, and eats a tad more fuel than my last one. Sure gets up and goes though. Love the '06 wheels and tires he put on it. Certainly would have loved a newer one, at least up to '06, but they were selling like hot cakes, and the dealers are a real pain, not to mention, I would have to have spent at least $11k more to get into one. http://bham.craigslist.org/cto/3401789855.html

The truck was/is extremely clean and looks well taken care of. Ran good on the test drive so away I went. Only problem I had was there used to be a pyrometer in the exhaust manifold and the plug blew out at exit 23 on rt 271N so a stop at a Autozone and a quick lesson to the counter person on what a 1/8 NPT plug is and I was on my way. Left my house in NY around 5 AM flew to Columbus and drove home by 5:30PM. There were a couple of issues. Had a converter shift hunting issue at 50 mph, a ferrite on the Alternator out put cable fixed that. New door cable for the interior release for the rear pass door. Map light switches needed repair. and the worst is, all new ball joints and outer tie rod ends.....good as new.
