Greetings all, I'm taking my 727 bb apart, and I need some information. - the extension housing bushing is very worn. - I'm attaching a photo of the rear output shaft bearing, which is in the extension housing just before the bushing.
The bearing is not really tight in the extension housing, I can with my fingers easily drop it in and remove it from the housing.
Is the bearing supposed to be fairly loose in the housing?

That bearing is a slip fit , does the bore in the housing look damaged ?
No, the bore in the housing doesn't look damaged (I need to have a second look though), but the outer race of the bearing is suspiciously shiny...
My thinking was that since the outer bushing is very loose, the output shaft movement and load had transferred to the bearing and maybe made it too a bit too loose.

Like mentioned they are a slip in fit and not very very tight. with the bearing in the ext housing can you move it side to side ?
If not, your good, if you can you need an extension hsg
Yes, with the bearing in the ext. housing I can move it slightly in all directions and I can also hear a clicking sound when it "slams" into the other wall. However, as you can see from the attached photo, the seat in the ext. housing appears nearly undamaged. Well, I guess I have to get a new bearing and see what I have then. Maybe I need to use a tiny amount of cement around the new bearing when the time comes to assemble it again.

I wouldnt bother with any type of sealant. From what I see I think you are 100% fine. Think about this, if it wasn't a slip fit, then the extension housing wouldnt dro down when you expand the snap ring...

Thanks for your inputs guys. I start believing it's ok too, anyway the bushing at the yoke will (probably) take most of the load. Seems like this bearing is there just to support the shaft in case it starts flexing in the middle? Thanks, Martin

The bearing is 72mm (2.8346"), the bore on a new housing is about 2.837" and will vary a little with temperature.

Thanks to all. I think I can move on with the rebuild of the 727 and not worry about this bearing anymore! Cheers, Martin

Ok, I went on taking the 727 apart...and discover that the thrust washer is missing between the input and output shafts...see the attached pictures. That explains the metal fragments I could see in the filter. Well, steel grinding on steel, it doesn't look pretty, some machining will be needed here. Strangely enough, the input shaft endplay was within limits without the thrust washer...might indicate I'm in for more surprises as the disassembly continues...
