so... i got a new 16" air cleaner and a
16" wix filter and drove the car to work today. on the way home right after i got on the road it ran really bad for a while, so bad i pulled over and looked under the hood to see if i was missing some spark plugs. i have an afr gauge and it was reading in the 10's for whatever reason. eventually it sorted itself out and i flogged it up to my house per usual, where i check more closely and see the filter has melted away in the front.
the car has a thermoquad with no choke, and when it's cold it will sneeze one of those lean backfires thru the carb if i'm not careful with the throttle. it did this when i pulled onto the road from work today. i figure that did the air filter in? this is a wix "racing" filter and it's pretty flimsy. i probably shouldn't be running it on the street anyway. the box says it "flame resistant" in case of backfire... but to fail this quickly sucks. the old filter was a summit brand k&n knockoff i ran for years with no problem.
then i guess the disintegrating media plugged up the carb for a while thus the lousy running? there was a bunch of sand inside the air cleaner too. i live in the desert and we had a pretty good sand storm today
