Thinking about getting one; does anyone have first hand knowledge about them? I'd like to gut it and turn it into a mostly cargo van/motorcycle hauler. How much inside height is available, and how hard would it be to open up the back and install a larger rear door. I saw one on Milwaukee CL set up that with a 5.9 Magnum swap, and I can't get the idea out of my head.

I had one that was a camper & one that was a cargo van
Both 360's the camper had 3.54 gears the cargo 4.11's
DRW both. I loaded the cargo with a few engines & 10-12 sets of heads on & on. Set it pretty low I put a 235/85/16 on the rear to kill some of the gear but they would bark in the wheelhouse on some bumps. 10-11 mpg loaded 60-65 mph

The camper got better doing 12-14 at the same pace
I sold it to a guy hauls his HD to Sturgis & sleeps in the camper
I had already fitted it with a 50 gal tank & towed 18ft V nosed enclosed trailer full of parts to swap meets
Both great workhorses
A Mag motor & 518 with 4.10's would be a great thing

The interior height on them depends on the model year. The early ones 1978-79 ? only had 4'10" inside .
Then 1980 ? to about 84 they stepped up the center portion of the roof for about 6" more inches of headroom. These measurements are all in the center area .....the rear couple feet on them by the rear door steps down about a foot more.

The 1985 to 90 models had 6 feet clearance inside but those were only built on chevy or ford chassis,s.

I checked out quite a few of them back when i was shopping for a little old RV but the lack of headroom made me look for other makes......

58" would allow me to fit a R1200GS in it without removing the windshield and 2" to spare, so that would work.

What about fitting a wider rear door?

Mileage sounds decent enough with the carbed 360. I would imagine a 5.9 Magnum with a 518 would help out a bit more. I really don't want to push more air than I have to. My other choices would be a real class C, a box van or a wheelchair van with a rear lift, so that I would have the taller doors. Unless someone runs across another Dodge VanUp...
