What is the type of material that is used inside the Muffler main bodies that muffle the noise. I know it's some type of fiberglass or something.

I'm no muffler engineer, but on the advice of Jere Stahl ,when I built my dyno mufflers,I used rock wool insulation. Some places call it mineral wool.
Some mufflers do use fiberglass but it doesn't seem to last as long and will burn out.

Oh, so I see. It's probably this mineral wool that is used in mufflers these days. I was thinking of opening up my Dynomax ultra Flo's and taking that material to use.
I also plan to build my own light weight mufflers. #$* things weigh a ton.

I'm pretty sure the Ultra Flows use mineral wool. Not sure on other ones.

I ran the Pypes Race Pro mufflers and the Magnaflow's because they had a layer of stainless mesh around an internal perforated tube, they sound great and will last a LONG time.

Where do you presume that this Mineral Wool is available?

I'm betting Home Depot or Lowes would have all you would need.

Know anybody that works in the trades? We use it as a backing for fire caulking around our duct work and our pipes in the HVAC field. Usually comes as a board and you cut or tear what you need. Easy material to work with but itchy [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean].

Looks like Mcmasters has it in their arsenal of products. It states that it can take 800 degrees of heat.
I'm sure that even at the tip of the collectors it is only about that hot and maybe 500-400 at the Muffs. Though my Muffs are out back just before the rear diff.

I bought mine from a local insulation supplier but I needed a few bats to make dyno mufflers out of 55 gallon barrels.
I did see it for sale at Menards after I bought mine.

nice to know im not crazy for thinking about stuff like this.

Winchester, fellas, Ladies, Okay, tomorrow or after this second storm coming, I will post some images of my current exhaust system and the incoming new.
Yes, you are not alone in the Mad Scientist board. Welcome aboard. LOL.
I may be wrong but I'm willing to experiment with this new lightweight system.
If I remember correctly, and I may have to go to my notes to confirm, but my all steel 3.5" into X junction into 3" Dynomax Ultra flo exhaust system ending and dumping just before the rear differential weighed in the neighborhood of 68 LBS. And that is with out any tail pipes. My recent exhaust system in which I am now replacing with an even lighter system weighed much less. When I post pictures, I'll be reflecting on my notes to give accurate weight numbers.

Here's my current military spec 304 stainless tube exhaust system. It weighs in @ 37 LBS with Mufflers and all. I hand built them about 7 years back.
The Dynomax Ultra flo Mufflers account for 24 LBS of it. The tubes are razor thin and are about 13 LBS.

Here's the even lighter Aluminum alloy mock up system. It weighs as is with out mufflers, 6 LBS.

The mufflers will be exact dupes of the Dynomax Ultra's but in Aluminum alloy to possibly bring the total weight of the whole system to 20 LBS or so.
Now, will this whole mess survive idling on the street in traffic? Only its Shadow will know. LOL.
I believe that it will survive as long as it is attached correctly. It should slip onto the collectors and use traditional rubber/steel clamps out back. A friend of mine had a similar system on his Chevrolet years back but I never saw it with my own eyes.
