Is the housing bent? I would check toe-in on rear end.

Put your brake drum/rotor on backwards and turn the nuts on just a couple of turns then give the drum a couple of good pulls... that always gets them out... sure isnt a twisted spline(the splines might be twisted but NOT in the engaged section)

I may have the same problem with my housing The car hopped real bad at Norwalk a few years ago and ever since then I have to force the axles in and out.Looks like I have a job to do this winter Gus

same here, had the same issue when I replaced mine after breaking a ring gear.

I have to go with the crowd here. And I think a brace is just a good idea once you dip into the 11's or so.
