So would the iron tailhouse eliminate that problem where that bushing or whatever it was from getting wore out and causing the tailshaft to wobble in the housing?

Ok thanks. Would you guys put one of these behind a 408?
What's a machinist charge to fix the floating countershaft issue/bearing retainer to work with my sb?

I think they have a 3.09 1st "granny" low gear. And it's a 3 speed trans that has an overdrive. The gear spreads are large. A 4" stroker doesn't need a low 1st gear.

I had one in the FD, It was an iron one.
I didn't like it. The ratio spread was exactly as others had said....It had a huge rpm drop-off from 1-2. For a NON performance app, it was probably fine.

Right now with my 416, I have to feather the thottle with a stockish converter and 727 with 3.23 rear gears.

Not to pick nits, but since it has 4 forward gears it is a 4 speed transmission. 3rd is 1 to 1 and 4th is either .73 or .71 to 1.

And to nitpick even further, in the OD 833, they swapped 3rd and 4th gears around inside the transmission so you could say 3rd gear is .71 or .73 and 4th gear is 1:1 Although if you flip the 3-4 shift lever updside down on the trans, you can retain the normal shift pattern instead of the wonky one the OD 833 vehicles had stock.

I had one behind a stock 360 in a 64 dart & as Frankenduster said the spread between 2 of the gears was terrible even in a DD

Is the passon setup the same way with 3rd and 4th flipped around like that inside?

I didn't realize the od's had a different pattern on the shifter?!

To the non supporters of the OD833. I say bullcrap. Ive had 1 in my 81 shorty PU for years. Its behind a 340 with a 268/272 .450/.455 cam with a 6 pac on top. Out back is a set of 3.91s with 275/60/15s. I love the OD833. I can cruse around town and theres not much that can beat me from stop light to stop light. Out on the highway the mileage is great. I
As I dont tow anything with my crewcab longbox dually Im considering changing the NP435 out and install my spare OD833 in its place.. get better mileage out of my 340 than I did when I bought the truck with the factory /6 in it....

I am truckless..

No, the passon is a totally new gear set.

The 833 O.D doesn't have a different shift pattern in it, the shift arms are reverse on the 3-4 gear selector so the shift patter stays the same,1-2,2-3,3(direct)-4(O.D.) not backwards or upside down I have several NP 833 O.D., one out of a F or A body and one out of a van, same or similar to the B-E bodys I'm told. I'm planning on using the short tailshaft trans in my 1969 Dart GTS 383 4 speed car

yup....the lever was flipped at the factory, so you had 1-2-DIRECT-OD

gear ratios are 3.09 1st, 1.67 2nd, 1.00 3rd .73 4th

it's a nice spread (about the same as a GM TH700R4) if you build an engine with a nice flat torque curve, it would work great with the A833OD. with that gear spread and the low first gear, a 3.23 or 3.55 is an ideal rear end ratio, which nets you a 10:1 to 11:1 overall first gear ratio, and a 2.36-2.59 4th gear ratio (which yields a 2000-2250 RPM cruise at 70mph with 27" tall tires like 255/60R15's)

but you have to plan for the gear spread. for me, that means slightly shorter duration, wider LSA cam, which sacrafices a bit of peak torque for a flatter torque curve where hopefully 90% of peak torque is available from say 2000-5000 RPM....

I have one from the factory in my slant 6 duster with 3.23's and 25" tall tires. great tranny, gear spread doesn't bother me. would be an awesome tranny behind a mild magnum headed 318 or 360, or even a stockish 5.7L hemi.
mine is an early tranny, full cast iron case.
