PPG and BASF both have a matte black. PPG uses a matte clear coat over the base matte finish while BASF has the clear mixed into the finish itself. I believe the Lexus in the pic uses BASF.

I really wanted to keep my car a flat white, but after seeing the cars in this thread and this car: I am rethinking that color choice.
I used to care but....... things have changed

BC/CC without the CC. Hot Rod magazine showed a few done that way a couple of issues ago. How about the 2 tones with flat on the bottom and gloss on top?

GTXKen, personally think turning (what appear to be?) an original red car that's in pretty nice shape? Into a flat black car would be a mistake, that car has potential in it's original color! If you do go with black at least leave it red under the hood, trunk, and jambs so it's easy to go back to red..
It’s true that the outer panels are all pretty much rust free and straight except for some rust in the lower quarters but the condition of the outer panels is deceiving and hides some major problems. The inner fenders are rusted at the firewall and shock towers, the trans cross member and front floors are cheese cloth where they exist at all and the rear wheel wheels no longer meet the trunk pan. It was born a red 66 383 Satellite (drive train is long gone) that at some point someone mounted 67 hood scoops to and installed a GTX rear seatback.

Yeah I always wondered what a RR would look like in the same color combo.

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

The first few cars have a higher matte sheen than the flat black shown on this B-body. It looks quit a bit different. Better I think. A little red accent color would look nice on it. Perhaps, a thin red stripe around the tires?

My first 65 Barracuda was flat black! It wasnt primer because it was smooth, not like a chalkboard or slate. It looked pretty cool with its chrome bumpers and rims and stainless strip over the rear fenders, hi-jacker air shocks in the back 80's style to clear the lip over the 10 inch wide tires. Hilarious! I painted the top of my 57 Fairlane in primer white and that would get dirty overnight, it felt like a chalkboard and was a dirt magnet.

I said I'd post some pics of it painted and here they are. Still waiting on the decals. I decided to go with a satin base with a cheap satin clear. This paint job is just temporary while I save up to buy a couple of new quarter panels for it next year at Carlisle. I dont want to have hardly any mud in, and with the new quarter panels I wont have much. Once I get every thing i need I'll do the car up gloss black base clear. I figured I have fun driving it around like this for a while. I also ordered up special made black and white general lee decals for it, vectors, push bar, black the windows out, electronic dumps, 464hp and 515tq. 440 motor ready to install, dana 60, hemi 4 speed, tti headers, tti 3" exhaust, all new interior, power windows, new bumpers and much more. I think the car will look pretty neat done up like this and will be different. My plate on the car will be "evil-01"

Being a total paint noob, how hard is it to spray a flat color. I would assume its easier than a normal paint job, but I'm curious.

Check it out....Here's the stuff! http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksflatz.aspxI have bought a gallon of Tangerine Flatz and didn't use it when I went too far with a resto and panel replacement. I get Jeffs point, but if your going for a concept: GO FOR IT! I may do the blown 69 Coronet with the Tangerine.

I don't know if epoxy primer is the same but Primers tend to be porous and allow air and water to come in contact with the metal. Not enough protection for the metal underneath.
epoxy primer wont do that. but it will get chalky in the sun and all. they make an entire line of flat paints now that hold up to the sun

I bought a gallon of black base and a gallon of flat clear and I'm going to give it a try this weekend on my 69 charger tub plus doors. I will be putting the vinyl top on it as well. Maybe it'll look something like this when I get done.

This is what those cars look like when you turn out the lights.

Interesting....
Anyway, I believe the technical term for the look you are trying to obtain is "satin". Try House of Colors or any major paint distributor. Everyone is painting the hot rods this way now....just a temporary fad. I agree with a previous post, the cash it takes to do body work and then lay a matte finish to it. It is sure a gamble.

Mercedes released a "Night Edition" SL550 in what they called Designo Satin Black. There was a follow up with a satin white color. The white car had a pearl in the paint. It looked pretty good outside in the sun.

My '73 swinger beater is John Deere 'Blitz Black'. I painted the car in my buddy's garage with high humidity and almost no prep work. The paint (which is a valspar enamel made for John Deere to paint suspension/frame parts) has held up AWESOME. It is still dark black after parking for years under the sun.
My '72 demon was painted 2K epoxy primer. I did a lot of body work and I wanted a bada$$ flat black car with the option to put real paint on top later. I wasn't sure if the blitz black would need to be sanded off to paint a regular base clear job. The demon looked great until I parked in the sun for a year- its really chalky, especially the roof.
The reason the enamel held up and the epoxy primer did not is simple. Primers do not have any UV stabilizers in them since they are meant to be topcoated with an actual paint. That is why, even though epoxy primer is not porous like some other primers, it is not a good idea to leave it exposed to the sun for any length of time. You are weakening the chemical makeup of the material and once it has been broken down like that, you'll need to re-primer it before painting if you want your paint job to hold up.
