Its time for me to do my first big block build, and just wanted to get some opinions from people here. I'm aiming for 500 horse, but that's not a firm number. I'd like to drive the thing somewhat regularly so I'd like to keep compression between 10-10.5:1, no wild cams. I figure aluminum heads would help matters as well (which ones though). I know this shouldn't be too hard, but I don't want to end up with a bunch of mismatched parts.

Way back noted racer Bill Bagshaw got 511 horse power out of a 30 over 440 with six pack pistons (heavy) at 9 or 9.5 to 1 I forget which, carefully home ported 906 heads with 2.14 1.81 valves using the MP templates and a holley street dominator intake and a holley 750 DP 4779 and 509 MP cam. Went mid 10's in a duster iirc. Dont remember if he unshrouded the valves or not (needed with 2.14/1.81's) nor what torque converter he used or fuel (he would have had no quench)

I'd think this recipe would get it easy enough:
CR: 10.5:1 (since you're using AL heads, should be fine) Heads: Prepped eddy heads from any of the mopar specific shops (I got mine from hughes, great results) Cam: Comp XE/Voodoo/Huges/Racer Brown/etc...anyone with aggressive lobes and specing ~ 232-238 @ .050 on the intake side w/ 108-ish LSA Headers: You'd want at least 1 3/4, but there are so many 1 7/8th's out there that are good quality... Any of the "good" ignition systems. Personally, I'd go with a good loose converter (2800rpm) and a mechanical secondary 850HP carb...
That would be an easy 500 hp, with reasonable streetability and killer performance.

it would be hard, but you COULD build one with as little as 500 hp.
for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

Here I'd a build I just did for a customer using his .040 over Speed pro bottom end. Edelbrock RPM heads with spring pressure corrected, non RPM Performer intake, 850 dp Holley,Hughes Whiplash cam,TTI1 3/4" headers,FireWire rtr distributor and coil. Not quote 500 hp(491 @ 5300). But torque was awesome . It did take a lot of fuel curve tuning to get the results, but 450/560 would pretty easy to get without it. Torque peak hit an unreal 578 and was over 500 from 2000 rpm,as low as I could pull it. Keith
What whiplash cam did you use ?

500 from a 440 is so easy, a caveman could do it!
10.5 compression, eddy heads, intake, carb, cam, headers and you're done.
my 383 block has a 440 crank in it, and is bored .060 over, so it's 438 cubic inches...or, a .010 under 440.
with out of the box edelbrock heads, an RPM intake, flat top pistons at zero deck for 10.5 compression, a comp XE-275-HL (around 230-235 duration @ .050 if memory is correct), holley 750 HP, and regular ole headers, I made 505 hp and 535 torque. my torque curve was also flat, over 500 from 3,000 rpm through about 5800 rpm.
made for a GREAT street motor!

You could build it a dozen different ways, the essential ingredients are heads that flow more than 250 cfm and compression and cam to suit. Heck, out of the box Stealths will do that. Go to www.arengineering.com and buy AndyF's book. Read it twice. R.
