Has anyone here put an Airaid intake kit on their 4.7L powered Ram?

These things end up on all of the Powerblock projects. I know those shows are part entertainment, part informational and a lot advertisement.

4wheelonline has one priced at $322 (the 300-232 kit).

Are there really performance and gas mileage improvements that would make it worth the money?

I've run the 4.7 but not with Airaid so a general comment. Factory systems are usually well designed... they provide cool air, keep rain, snow and floods at bay and flow well at stock power ratings. They are also servicable with cost effective replacement parts. Unless you have modified the engine significantly to increase air flow, I don't think it will help and may hurt. I'd use the $322 for something else.

I agree with the above post, the stock box is pretty well designed. I don't believe that the auto companies build air cleaners and boxes that restrict air flow to the point that it would cost gas mileage.

In the 60s and 70s Mopar could get plenty of air (even fresh air) to the Hemis and 6 BBLs, so I'll just bet they can get air to a 4.7 or 5.7 in a truck.

It's been my experience that the 4.7 is really underpowered in the full size Ram. I would be very surprised if there is much you can do to it that will really pay off in increased power and/or mileage.

I usually get better mileage with the 5.7s.

Master, again and still

I put a K&N CAI on the 4.7 HO in my '06 Dakota and it did nothing. I was kind of surprised as I had put one on my '00 5.9 Dakota and it had picked up about 1 mpg.

Your Rams MAP sensor
can tell you if a brand new CAI did anything
but you should compare it to a new fresh factory air filter.

But what about 10,000 miles later,
did the expensive CAI clog up faster?

CAI are generally a scam
That rely on
The typical buyer not being knowledgeable about
reading MAP at full throttle
or checking it several thousand miles later.

Be smart and buy something more useful.

Porting the heads is many times more effective than any CAI

I've been reading too many articles online about K&N's filtering way too poorly for me to ever want to put one on my engine. I also don't think stock air boxes are designed that badly these days. And even if they do give up a little hp, I bet it would only be at peak rpm, not during regular driving.

Correct. The 4.7 Ram pulls its air from above the wheel area. Relocating the IAT sensor will yield the same results but the computer will try to override. Best to save for gears. The 4.7 needs a lower gear. 4.10 or 4.56 is your best bet.

Way back in 2004 or so a customer installed a K&N cold air intake on their new Hemi Ram. They ran the truck in the sand dunes for a short time and locked up the engine. When it came back to the shop the engine had so much sand in the oil pan that the oil would not even drain. To make a long story short DO NOT BUY A COLD AIR INTAKE, it is a waist of money. The only thing it does well is make the engine louder.
