My buddy has a small problem. His fan clutch has decided after 8 years to stay engaged all the time. This is killing his mileage. He is in a bit of a financial tight and I am wondering IF I unplug the electrical harness will it cause any issues until he can get the $230 he needs to replace the clutch.
I am thinking that the fan will still free wheel and cool the engine adequately since he does little city driving.

Unless I'm mistaken it will trip a code and turn on the check engine light.

I know that they wouldn't pass the Huntsville (electrical) test on the assembly line if it isn't plugged in.

When I was the Final line Huntsville repairman on the line I saw way to many of them like that if there was a new operator on the line. They'd forget to plug it in.

I know it will trip the check engine light. I told him that. We don't have inspections here. He needs to get by about a week and a half but not loose so much in mileage. It lost almost 8mpg according to the trip computer just going 40 miles home Sunday.

If it disengages when it's unplugged I'm thinking that the fan clutch may not be the issue.

Whatever sensor tells it to be engaged may be.

from what I can gather from the cummins sited it is computer controlled. I was thinking that it was controlled by the temperature sending unit but they say by the computer/ecm. So that will be a female mammal in heat.

But there has to be something that tells the engine controller to engage and disengae , no ?

All it takes is the voltage to be off a little and the sensor would send the wrong signal/info.

I have been out of the dealer for a few years now but I remember that setup in one of my books. I just dont remember the exact way it works. The PCM controls it as it uses the coolant sensor reading which it uses for all the systems that need eng temp reading. I cant remember if you unhook it if it will engauge or disengauge ? Course it will set a code. How does he know its staying engauged ? Can he hear it staying on driving it ? I will try to find the info as I have a whole book on the Diesel systems if I can just find it. Ron

The clutch on our 03 CTD went bad. It messed with the TPS and made the truck accelerate on its own. It was a trip...to say the least.

We unplugged the clutch and drove it that way for 2 months without any issues.
