Guys, I have torn down my steering column as I needed to swap out the turn signal handle and the ignition cylinder. While I have it torn down, I need to repaint it to make it pretty again where it had some scratches/chips from getting beat on when the car was being resored. What kind of paint should I use to paint this? I have the three housings which are made of aluminum. I have them sanded down well (still mostly painted but sanded well) to a 320 grit. The paint doesn't have to exactly factory but I want it to be close if possible. What do you guys use to paint the column which looks factory (least close) and will hold up well? EDIT: Steering column is black. Thanks!

you didnt note what year and model youre working on??
Im going out on a limb without knowing and say you need Mike Mancinni's suede finish paint, its a little pricey but its exactly what the factory used. Your local PPG supplier may be able to mix the suede but most cannot.
I just looked at your signature and guess thats what youre restoring...so the above should be be what you need.

I use Rustoleum TEXTURE black (number 7220 ) or Dupicolor semi gloss black on the non textured parts. You can dry spray the dupicolor paint to get the textured look as well.

I found this paint and got it on after two coats of primer. Looks very nice so far! I am going to wait a day or so and then throw on a second coating to make it tougher.
Would I want to clear coat this and what would I use? I have some Eastwood Diamond Clear Satin but I am afraid that will gloss it up more than I want. I am also not totally sure it won't damage the top coat.
Rustoleum has their clear coat but they are all hi-gloss which is not the direction I want to go in here.
Any ideas what I can use here or should I just leave it as is?
Thanks!

Just leave it. Don't clear coat it
The steering column gets a lot of "traffic" Is this going to hold up without the clear?

The correct color is available from PPG.The interior colors are on the back of the color charts for the body colors.
Leave the gun.......take the Cannoli's....Mike

I know this sounds crazy but keep it warm... you will see a difference over the next 30 days... I would not clear coat it,, just let it be.. will take 6 weeks to totally set up.. Thats how it worked on my car...
I am talking about TEXTURE BLACK.. If you get to much texture or grainy,, go back over with Resto plain Black Satin....

SEM trim black
This is not a bad idea, I have used it and it looks good, very close.
What year and model car are we asking about?

TCP Global can mix it a lot cheaper then Mike Mancini is selling it for,
This may be true, but they are using the currently available texture additive that is way too coarse and will not achieve a factory testure, you won't even be able to run a cloth over it without snagging and shredding. Ours is mixed using probably the last or the original formula suede additive on the planet. I have limited supplies and once it is gone, it's gone.
