Trying to identify some 340 dampers. Did they all have casting numbers cast into them? I have a couple that I can't seem to find any on. I know they are for use on a forged crank. One of them is flat on both sides, the other is concave on the back side.

The other thing I am in question on is if you can use a 68-69 damper with a 70 timing cover. Can some one school me on mixing 340 timing covers and dampers used with a forged crank. Don't want to end up with a timing mark mismatch or any other problem.

Thanks
Dan.

There are two options for using a '68-'69 damper with a '70 cover:

1)Remark top dead center on the damper to line up with '70 cover. Get a piston stop to screw into the spark plug hole to find TDC.
2)Find a '68 and earlier small block timing pointer that bolts to the bottom of water pump.

Now which option above depends on what water pump you use. The '70 up aluminum water pumps have a passenger's side lower radiator hose so use option 1. If you are running a '69 and earlier cast iron water pump with driver's side lower radiator hose use option 2. Option 2 is what I did because I run the cast iron pump.
