Wouldn't be the first time they were wired wrong..

If you set the crank(damper) at 34* on the compression
stroke and drop in the dist pointed at #1 it'll start...
if you set the crank at 0 and install the dist its
ZERO timing and you end up turning it to 34 or there
abouts if its a locked dist.... if it has advance set
it at 20* then drop in the dist

Listen to this advice and I bet it fires right off!

Are your throttle blades cracked open enough to let air in?

It starts and runs for 3 seconds. So you have ignition with the switch in the Start position. Do you still have ignition in the Run position?
Check by moving dist back and forth fast enough to generate a signal.

that's possible .as a quick check you can also run a jump wire the to the coil so it will always be hot during the test DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW

The crank AND run wires should be tied together on
a MSD with NO ballast

I am going to relate a story and I doubt this is your problem but something to check...

This one time late at night thrashing to get a 440 started I installed the wires on the cap in the correct firing order...clockwise. After many swapped parts and much head scratching my partner in the project ( the missus ) was reading the factory service manual and pointed out that a big block distributor turns counter clockwise. Just a thought that I can't seem to get out of my head for some reason.

One more thing to check is the rotor phasing.
Pull the distributor cap. rotate the engine until the dist trigger wheel lines up with the pick-up coil. This is when the dist tells the MSD to fire the plugs. Then see if the rotor still points at the post in the cap.
Do this for Cyl #1 and your ignition timing can be read on the balancer

I have a toggle switch to the power the msd box it has power when cranking and running. this is how i have it hook up. the big red wire goes to the postive side battery the big black wire goes to the neg on battery. two small coil wires black goes to neg side of coil samll orange goes to postive side of coil. that is the onley wires that goes to the coil. then the two distributor wires that plug one way.then a red 14 gauge wire goes to the from the msd to the toggle switch then to a relay. when i flip the toggle switch i have power on the msd full time then i ran a jumper wire to a push button starter. Thank for all the replays i'm loosing my pateince.

What's the relay for & how is it connected to the toggle switch?

the engine is on a engine break in in stand. you have to have toggle switches and relay for starter to kick in.

I think the 1st thing to do is to separate the ignition from the relay. Run a wire from the battery to one side of your ign toogle switch, then from the other side of the sw to the MSD red wire.
