Car is a 1968 Road Runner with V8 K and conversion mounts
Engine is 472 crate hemi from mopar,

I have two sets of valve covers that don't fit.

The first set is cast aluminum stage V, but they hit on the passenger side fender well where the shock mounts.

The next set is a stamped steel original style black wrinkle finish that has a splash guard on the inside that hits on the valve train on the drivers side.

I assumed that 426 covers would clear on a 472.

Anyone have any experience with this?

My current plan is to remove the splash guard and see if that give enough clearance.

Thanks

Move the engine over...Since two sets of covers don't clear, I would be looking at the engine mounts.

I have Schumaker conversion mounts in my 68 RR and stock valve covers clear the shock tower. As far as a conflict between a baffle in a stock valve cover, all stock valve covers should work on a 472 crate motor. (K heads excluded but that would be obvious) Maybe remove or trim the baffle, or maybe a thicker valve cover gasket. Did you mock it up to check for clearance without the gasket?

I think Indy makes a set designed for a bodies, they may fit, but I'm not positive. Dave

common problem with cast valve covers, especially on ebodies.
as said earlier try to move the motor over as much as you can.
also see if you can lower the engine.
see if you can find shorter valve covers, the taller the valve cover gets the worse it will hit..
if all of the above will not work you might have to modify the shock tower to clear the valve cover.

here is a pic of a modified ebody shock tower.

un-modified other side for comparison.
i also flattened the upper control arm bumps to add clearance for headers.

Yeah it can be tight in there. Here is a pic of the passenger side in my wife's challenger.

thanks for feedback.
I will see if I can remove the breather splash guard in the steel valve covers to get the clearance I need on the valve train.
Seems easier than modifying inner fenders at this point.

Why didn't they adjust the valves often enough on hemis back then?
That picture explains it!

On a factory car those VC's come off in no time, you have to wiggle around the heater hoses and removing the brake booster takes time, that's all. Repro parts don't fit like factory parts do.
