Came without AC?

A local guy has a numbers 71 440-4 GTX. Talked with him for a few hours yesterday. He says his car is the only 71 GTX he has seen without AC from the factory. Just wondering....

1146 came WITH air...

I show 2703 delivered...

That leaves 1557 'without' air...

229 with Strato-Vent...

all the 6 pack cars were non a/c as it did not clear the air cleaner base. I have seen a few non a/c gtx's in 71 but I did not look close enough to see if it was just the compressor removed and an a/c cowl. But I would find it hard to believe as there were still a good # of gtx's made in 71 not sure the exact # but I think it is just over 2100 and I would highly doubt they were all a/c cars.

Plus, every 4-spd '71 GTX made will not have the AC option.

School me please. I've heard of this but I don't know exactly what it is. BTW, the 71 Plymouth B-bodies are one of my favorties. I owned (and parted) a 71 red 383 auto RR and a 71 B5 blue GTX 440-6 4 speed (did not part out) 30 years ago.

Sooooo, there were 2538 440-4bbl cars; 2211 of them were autos and since a 440-4bbl auto was the only combo in which A/C was available, then if 1146 had A/C then 1065 didn't

So I would say that a non-A/C, base engined, automatic '71 GTX is NOT appreciably rarer than an A/C equipped one.

Interesting. This car has the Strato-Vents.

It also had the dictaphone (sp?) also.

Look at the fire wall to see if the holes are there for the AC lines, or maybe filled in.

Yeah, you can look for the outlets at the firewall for the evaporator(A/C only)...

Or, look at the heater control panel...

Should be labelled 'Strato-Vent'...

I've had 4 '71 GTXs and only one had A/C. Personally, I have seen more of them without A/C than with. Another point I have always found interesting about these cars; HD suspension and torque boxes were standard but, Sure-Grips were an option on most of the autos. Weird!

Master, again and still

I had 2 71's, 1 4spd 1 auto, neither had A/C or strato. A friend ordered a new 4spd and had strato. All were 4V. He sold it years ago and it it now in the smokey mountain car museum.

FWIW I stripped a '71 440-4 GTX in a junkyard here, about 12-13 years ago.

It was a very basic car, blue/blue column auto. No A/C
