Thanks again everyone. Figured I would post it,,if it helps someone else,,,or at least remind people to check their bolts. These were not ARP bolts,,,they were new though. I am going to get some ARP's for the install. I like the inspection cover idea,,,not much room with the pan i run, dont think i could get one to fit,,but might take a look on the install,,i have a extra laying around,,, it's hard to hear any "noise" coming under the car,,,just a few drips of oil off the back of the pan,,was the only clue. thanks again for all the posts....I'll get it fixed pretty quick i hope.

Pan looks to be leaking "just a bit" ( with the motor running, not with it off and sitting ) going to pull the pan to check it for sure....also going to "prime" the motor,,before i pull the pan,,so i can lay under the car and check for any areas of leakage while i have someone spin the oil pump with a priming shaft.

When I drop the new engine in this winter with a fresh clutch, I will make sure the block saver is in between the flywheel and bellhousing.
Is there such a thing for the automatic trans guys?

Sorry to see that happen . Glad you`re on top of the repairs and it`s not too bad. Same thing happened to my tow vehicle when a welded on weight on the converter went for a walk after two years . B&M flex plate was the way to go for me maybe you too ! Built a lot beefier. Chryco

I hear this so many times on this site it makes me cringe. When I was still working loc-tite salesmen would come in and tell us about new products, old products, and how to use them. Here are a few does and dont's. 1. All bolts nuts and fasteners must be clean. Recommended procedure is to clean the bolt on a wire wheel, soak and clean them in an oil free cleaner like paint thinner, and blow dry. 2. After applying loc-tite torque nuts or bolts to proper spec. 3. NEVER EVER retorque nuts and bolts at a later date as you will only break the seal that the loc-tite made. visual inspection only. With convertor bolts sometimes it requires stacking open end wrenches (wrench on wrench. cheater lever) to get the bolts to proper torque. He recommended 271 (red) as the proper loc-tite for this use. 4. If you don't know the history of the bolts that you are going to use "get new ones" they are not that expensive. If your convertor bolts come loose after doing the above method you have other issues going on.(alignment, vibration, ect.) REMEMBER loc-tite will not work on greasy oil soaked bolts. Good-luck with your repairs and I hope all goes well.
This is a very good, often overlooked, point. For the chemical threadlocker to work properly, the joined parts must be clean.
Also, after installation, take some good touch-up paint (a silver Sharpie would probably work good too) and paint a line on the flexplate and bolt head so that you can tell if the bolt loosens.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Doug. Bobby had a similar experience with the Belvedere years ago. One of the bolt lugs welded to the converter decided to come loose in the burnout box. The bolt, still screwed into the lug, pulled through the hole in the flexplate from the centrifugal force. Although it sounds worse than your experience, the damage wasn't as bad.

I had the same thing happen to my 1967 GTX. It was making a really bad noise I pulled over on the side of a pretty busy hiway and left the car. Got a ride home, went back to get it a little over a hour later it was gone.Have not seen the car since. That was in 1992.I had the car since I was 16 years old.Now I make sure the bolts are tight.

Sure can.... deep impact 6 point socket right on my CP impact... I have the flex and the conv painted on one ear and one bolt hole so it lines up right.. I put one bole in finger tight then rotate it to get all 4 in then hit it with the impact a couple of short hits then turn it and so on

for ANY adhesive to work properly the surfaces must be clean and oil free. sealants, locking compounds, epoxy etc. even the most exotic sticky stuff won't stick to dirt and oil.
a high volatility cleaner should be used to remove any traces of oil. brake cleaner (the good stuff outlawed in NJ and CA stuff), acetone or similar.

I had a problem a few years ago... I kept breaking/cracking flex plates until I found the problem, the bolts to hold the convertor to the flex plate were a little too long and were bottoming out before tightening thus leaving a tiny gap between the bolt head and the flex plate. We just shortened the bolts a thread or two, applied plenty of Loc-Tite and never had the problem again.

Just a thought (from personal experience), but are you sure the converter bolts are the culprit here, and not the converter itself. This is exactly what will happen when a converter balloons. If it did it during the run but then was quiet again when off the throttle, that would again make me be suspicious of the converter. If it was just the bolts, they would have rubbed before and after the run as well. Hopefully its as simple as the bolts. But I'd think about having that converter checked out before I just re-threaded it and stuck it back in there.
