I'm about to mount an engine block I have on my engine stand and start assembling it. Many of the internal parts for the engine, such as the crankshaft and rod/piston assemblies, have been sitting out for a while now. What's the best way to clean the dust off the parts? I'm sure a parts washer would work great, but I don't have one of those.

I guess a big-ish rubbermaid container should be big enough to immerse the crank, and not cost an arm and a leg

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Be prepared to oil it FAST. I use a good spray bottle (cheap ones wont last) and fill it part way with eng oil then add the right amount of solvent to thin it out to the right proportions & shake it up to mix the two & I'm ready & it's fast & cheap

Laundry soap mixed with water in a bucket.

Hand cleaned with an Engine bottle brush kit you can buy from Summit. (two long bottle brushes on ground behind feet in picture below)

Then soapy mix sucked/mixed into a shop air pressured spayer (hanging off bucket in picture below).

Then hosed soap off.

Then pressurized air dry.

Then all machined surfaced wiped down with Justice Brothers JB-80 to keep it from rusting. JB-80 will protect much longer and better than most common stuff out there.

Immediatly masked and painted the inside of the block rustoleum to seal casting and promote oil drainback.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll give the hot water & soap thing a shot.

Yep, used to do that too..

..until the wife walked in unexpectedly soon one day!

You would've thought I was caught fornicating with the neighbors wife!

The hotter the water the better just because it evaporates quicker leaving less time to cause rust. That's an old trick black powder shooters used cleaning there rifles with soap & water. Get it as hot as you can stand so the water doesn't stick around.

EXACTLY, I have used my steam pressure washer to clean many engines, trans, gear boxes, pumps, diffs, you name it, I cleaned it with my pressure washer. It has been so worth owning it, mine get's over 212 or right at it.

It's nasty, dirty, wet job but works great.

I live alone. I stick'em in the oven at 550 for a half hour or so. That ashes the oil pretty well, but the neighbor's wife came over and asked if I had a fire. Non-fornicatable, by the way.

Take all your greasey tin, iron, bolts and loose parts to your local machine shop that has a hot chemical high pressure spray cabinet. Wouldn't cost much to have them do it since their spray cabinet will be up and running anyway. This would save you a lot of time and aggravation cleaning all the parts, besides having to take care of the mess afterward.

For hot water, run a hose out of your water heater. Used to be Ivory left no soap residue. The brushes Autoxcuda has are essential for the oil galleys. Blow dry, wipe down with oil or WD40 or the JB stuff, bag or cover everything to keep clean, Rustoleum primer or Glyptal for internal cast surfaces or oil them too. Cast iron will flash rust in minutes in anything but a bone-dry climate unless it has residual oil on it (as in not clean enough). Never used the spray-can paint for the innards myself, always the brush-on, but I suppose the spray-can stuff is OK.
I'm referring to the pre-assembly cleaning, after everything's been cleaned by the machine shop.
