From a post on a Dakota Forum:

"Most technical standards prefer a crimped and strain relieved connection because it's generally the most idiot proof. If the wires are properly stripped and fully inserted, and IF the correct connector is used the with correct ratcheting crimper, then the connection is gas tight so corrosion won't be an issue. The strain relief built into the connector prevents the wire from flexing and breaking off at the crimp point.

Soldering on the other hand is not idiot proof and the connection even if properly soldered is often not strain relieved. Most solder connections typically have way too much solder and if it's not a cold solder joint the solder wicks too far up the wire strands, past whatever strain relief of heat shrink tubing. Then when the wire is flexed, the strain is applied at the end of the solder wicking allowing the wire to break. If you can't see all of the exterior wire strands, it's too much solder and if it's not smooth and shiny like chrome, it's a cold solder joint."

I crimp everything now WITH the right tool, and shrink wrap the connection. If you can solder like a pro, do it if not...Crimp.

Just thinking out loud here but couldn`t I go take a high end fuse panel out of a modern car that is already equipted w/new style fuses and relays and go from there? Not being cheap but some factory stuff is as good as it gets from what I`ve seen working on these things.............

I would just use some fuse blocks added to the factory wiring. This will be the most straight forward approach for the beginner. Run the lights, etc on the original stuff and run the aftermarket stuff (ignition, fuel pump, etc) on relays that get power from fuse panels. I think this will also be the most economical way as well.

Another thought; Make yourself a wiring diagram when you do re-wire. You'll thank yourself later.

I had a fellow that would wire street rods and race cars in my shop. I have never seen one of his neatest methods used by anyone else.He designed and laid out the the harness on a full sheet of peg board. The board had units to be wired in a location close to the finished project. That allowed him to then bundle the wires and keep it all very clean. When done it was transfered to the car .It was alost a perfect fit.

That looks like a decent kit.... I have about $200
invested into mine BUT I have plenty of wire left over
on spools for other projects

that sounds like the best option IMO. i don't know why more people don't do it. the late model OEM fuse boxes are hard to beat.

For one reason; There are multiple microprocessors in the fuse center. It is known as Body Control Module A. Or at least it is on the wifes Nitro.

I'm not so sure how those processors would work on an old fashioned wiring set-up. You might want to talk to an experienced Chrysler tech/electrician first.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Most new fuse boxs are know as TIPM or TIPMCGW they have FCM in them. Not good for a race car . Beside I have to replace 1 every two weeks because they go bad. they have modules in them to control alot of stuff. FCM=front control module TIPM = totally intergrated power module. TIPMCGW=totally intergrated power module central gateway module. beside you would need a wiring dailgram with a connector pin out and the connectors to use one.

The first thing to do would be make a list of things that need power. At that point you can decide on what can share a home run to the fuse box and what needs a relay and so on to figure out how many circuits you will need.

The main reason for running some of the original harness is to reuse the connections for the steering column, body/light wiring, w/s wipers (if you have them), etc. At that point you can clean up the wiring you have added on by landing the (+) side to an ATC fuse block that is powered from your existing Ford relay. I bet I could rewire the car for less than $100 that way. It would be nice, functional, and easy to troubleshoot or add additional circuits.

Well then get your azz over here and I`ll even buy you lunch and beers. I`m a bit lost on the newer junk yard model boxes and the associated issues you guys mentioned. My thaught was to rob the box and the relays and newer fuses and tie it into my wiring loom....... Can`t I isolate/remove those thingies and go from there? Thankxxxx..............

With self reseting circuit breakers at about $2 each, or an 8 circuit ATO/ATC fuseblock for about $12 plus fuses, and only about $5 per relay/base/term pkg, I really don't see much of a cost savings by buying a used junkyard fuseblock. You can tailor your electronics to do exactly what you want, without having to figure out the quirks of a factory board.
