Changing the oil pan on my 340 Demon and naturally I needed to change the pickup. Had to remove oil pump from engine and noticed there wasn't a gasket there. I did not originally assemble this motor so I can't say as there was a gasket supplied. Looking at various sites and some suppliers show a gasket and some don't. Dodge shop manual says nothing about a gasket. Oil pressure was good, 100psi at 6000rpm maybe a little high. Question is "should I use a gasket"? Thanks for your replies

Not used in all applications, although most new pumps do come supplied with a gasket. Some people just feel better with using one. The SB gasket is available from AR Engineering or myself. I know of no other gasket manufacturers that offer them.

I've been here long enough to know this has the potential to end up like a pinion angle thread..

In any event I didn't use one on my 408.

I just make the gasket out of a cereal box.

Too thick of material, and asking for a problem IMO .. just leave it out, its what the factory did.

To clarify, after I make the gasket I peel off the smooth side basikely peeling the gasket in half, then just use the cardboard side of it. Done this on 2 stroker motors and several stock motors with more than enough oil preasure. Or dont use one at all as stated above. Just wanted to make the point that he doesnt have to go out and buy one.

If that gasket fails, it'll have real low psi and cause engine failure. Don't use it!!

Probably won't be a problem if it was a Wheaties box . Melings come with a gasket. Every factory motor I have ever taken apart had a gasket. Works fine both ways though.

Thats weird.... I have only seen 1 in a engine...
the gasket comes with a new pump and I have a FEW
of them hanging on a nail in the shop... needless
to say I dont use them... I have seen some caps that
had a pretty rough surface on them and I just use
some 400 paper on the surface plate to smooth out
the surface

Like I mentioned, some guys just feel better having a gasket there. The early hemis use the same style main cap and pump. I have never found a base gasket in a passenger car application. BUT....every marine engine has had the gasket.
