I'm fixing to have my 69 Roadrunner painted back the original color (Y2) so I went to the local PPG store and got them to mix me up some base/clear and some single stage paint. The guy painting my car was going to paint the base/clear on the outside of the car and in the engine compartment. He was going to do the underside and interior in the single stage. He sprayed my battery tray with the base/clear and then he sprayed my exhaust hanger with the single stage. Both of these were PPG brand paints and I'm not sure about the base but he called the single stage "concept". The single stage paint wasn't as bright of a yellow as the base paint was. I'm new to this whole process but I would think they would be pretty close since the guy at the paint store said he could cross reference the codes. If anyone has any ideas or can tell by my pictures which color seems to be closest to the original color I would appreciate it.

Pick the color/finish you like,...and paint the ENTIRE car with it. don't half-a$$ it by painting/jambing it with 2 "different" base formulas

It is not uncommon to paint the engine compartment, undercarriage and hidden areas with single stage because it is very difficult to wetsand and and polish those areas. I think the color should match more closely. I did a Y2 RoadRunner in Omni AU, a PPG brand, and it seemed to match pretty well with the Omni single stage.

From the photos, the battery tray is the more accurate color.

Get chips from different manufacturers to find a match...

I would paint the whole car with the same paint. I did the same thing your painter is talking about to my Challenger, base coat clear coat on the body and single stage everywhere else. I didn't like it. The two different paints didn't match very well and the single stage wasn't as shiny, almost looked flat next to the clear coat. Also the tape lines were pretty obvious and the two paints aren't compatible, like if you need to go back and touch up something make sure its the same kind of paint. I'm doing another car now and I will be doing base and clear on the entire car. Mine was yellow too.

If you want to match the color, find an area where the original color still exists, and is untouched....under the windshield gasket is a good place to find untouched original paint, as well as the door jamb area near the hinges, understide of the decklid...etc,etc

If your looking to recreate the factory "look", go with the single stage on the entire car....if your looking for that over restored look, BC/CC the entire car...

And no matter how closely you match the paint, there are too many variables that can influence it's appearance, primer/sealer shade value, coverage/painter technique, booth conditions, etc, etc,...

Also, think very hard about if you want the underside of the car painted body color. That was my biggest regret with my car. I really wish I'd have gone the primer/overspray route. You can use a durable paint that matches the color of the original primer for more protection.

I agree. As the name suggests Sunfire yellow is a bright sunny light yellow. It's not like Banana, but it shouldn't look beige in any fashion.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I too was thinking the brighter yellow on the battery tray appeared to be more like the original color. I will have to talk to my paint man about proceeding in a different manner. Any other advice or opinions is appreciated.
