My Mirada has just started making a kind of popping noise when driving over bumps recently. It doesn't happen all the time, it only seems to start after driving the car for about 1/2 hour or more, then it will do it over every little bump. Leaning on the fender hard enough when the car is parked will do it too.
Then it seems after the car is parked for a while and every thing is cool the noise will go away again. It seems to be coming from the lower ball joint or the edge of the lower control arm.

The weird thing is, all the ball joints, bushings and tie rods are new. I replaced it all with Moog stuff back in May. However, it was making a similar noise on the driver side back before I changed everything in the front end, and I recall the ball joint on that side being pretty loose when I got it all apart. After changing it out, the problem disappeared until now. I can only guess the lower ball joint is going out on the passenger side now, I thought Moog made decent stuff but I'd expect one of the cheap chinese ones to last longer than 4 months.

my 71 charger did that, i replaced the strut bushings both upper and lower control arm bushings, shocks , idler arm, and still had the clunk so it must have been the ball joints as that was the only thing i didnt replace that could make a clunk that im aware of.

My 73 did that and it was because the idiot who aligned the front end didn't tighten down the Upper control arm pivots.

Also check your sway bar links and bushing mounts.

All that stuff is new, the only thing I didn't change in the front end were the lower control arm bushings and pitman arm. I never thought it might have to do with UCA's, but it might. The alignment is terrible too, after I put all the new stuff in, a shop who is supposed to be good with older cars did it for me. I don't know where they got their specs but the tires have noticeable positive camber and as far as I can tell no or maybe neg caster. I 'll guess I'll get someone else to align it again, and take a look at the ball joints etc..

why wouldnt you change the lca bushings?they are the the biggest wear out part in your front end.granted the hardest to change but never the less would have been the first thing i would have changed

I had some popping one time due to a dry socket on a torsion bar anchor. Regreasing it took care of that problem.

One other thought is the shocks. I have a set of cheap Monroes on the front of my '64 and the passenger side one has started popping.

Unfortunately, I didn't discover it was the shock until after I had replaced the lower ball joints.
