Hey gang..
As a lot of you already know, I have this '68 Hemi Charger R/T I've been trying to sell to get a Daytona.. But, in the mean time, I continue with the resto.. I was curious about the location of parts I need.. I know there are people who are selling the front leaf spring hanger, rear leaf spring shackles and the leaf spring rebuild kit (rubber bushings, straps, etc..)

I just got threw this weekend cleaning the heck out of the original springs and want to keep them....

Thanks...

Most of the aftermarket rear shackles I have seen don't look like stock parts. If you strike out you can always buy a clean used set and clean them up + install new rubber. Around here those type of parts never get more than a little surface rust on them. No reason they can't be used for another 40 years.

Thanks Neil... I prefer nice originals as well and then coat them with a clear metal treatment for corrosion control......... Know of a set out there for a '68 B-body? Something like you've stated before, a clean up with a wire wheel and be done with it......

Even up here in the rust belt I try to re-use the original rusty shackles when I can, but finding clean examples up here is impossible.
I find that with MANY of the larger vendors they do not list EVERYTHING that they sell on thier web site. A quick phone call or email will confirm what they do sell.

Bill Rolik is another great source for the best reproduction parts available

So what's the best way to approach the leaf springs themselves? Should they be re arched? or would you just use a rebuild kits on 35 year old springs?

This space left intentianlly blank.

Personally, mine seem to be fine.. When I disassembled my Charger, the stance of the car looked fine. I've seen with some instances of people who got their original springs rearched, they went too far and the car had a funny "too-high" look once reinstalled.

I'm going to clean up my spring leafs, utilize a rebuild kit with the new strap, spacers and innerliners. I'll also new front hangers and rear shackles..

The rear shakels of my car were way to pitted to reuse but I found a set from Spicer that looked 95% and were natural finish like originals...were $22 each from a local auto parts store. My car is a Challenger but yours may be the same part.

Seems the OEM differential u-bolts aren't that easy to track down.. Any suggestions?

I got correct looking U-bolts from Megaparts not long ago. They have the rebuild kits too for the leaf springs.
There is available a very close repro of the shackles (only difference is the stud has finer threads.
Why would you need front hangers unless they are badly rusted? I would clean up a nice pair of originals before I'd install a repro pair. I may have a clean used set if you need them that bad.

The only problem I have with my front hangers is there is the slightest of pitting from normal exposure. Once there's new paint applied, it never has the same smoothness as new stampings.... I've ordered the rebuild kit from Jaime at Megaparts.. I'm getting shackles now. Hopefully they will be in before the weekend and I can start to disassemble the leaf springs and begin restoration.. Hopefully it'll be fun.. I'll be getting my shackles and front bushing from Bill Rolik....

I'll probably hold off from getting the front hangers and follow your suggestion and see how they clean up in a bead blaster...

Thanks to all for your replies....

Troy - best of luck on your rear susp rebuild. Sand blasting/glass beading - as you may already know - usually removes the slighter pitting, then you could use a Dremel tool, or the like, on them to carefully 'grind' down & 'blend' deeper pits to achieve a smoother finish for the final paint.
