According to my 70/71 parts catalog. The part # is 2808 880 and was used in all models except the Dart & Valiant whose part # is 2808 772. No mention of material being either plastic or metal. Just my $0.02...

Agree that the additional info section of the manual lists what you provided and the accessories section lists the following ; 2808 880 - Plymouth, Dodgde, Chrysler, Imperial 3420 614 - Belvedere-Sattelite, Coronet-Chrger 2277 597 - Valient, Dart, Cuda, Challenger
Your correct, no mention of material or the PN (2837 679) on my March 70 built car. Like I said earlier, not the first undocumented MOPAR change.
